The “Wear Sunscreen’ speech by Mary Schmich is one of my favorite graduation speeches ever given and each year I’m amazed at how well it ages. Over 20 years (and counting) after the Wear Sunscreen speech by Mary Schmich was given I continue to find wisdom and great life advice throughout it.
Mary does a great job of being serious, but also funny. She is informative, but not boring. She gives life advice without being preachy. She jokes up front that her only statement with science behind it is to wear sunscreen. But it’s the things she mentions with no facts just her life experiences that truly capture your attention and make you think.
Throughout the wear sunscreen speech, Mary Schmich talks about truths about life and growing up. She address that fact that most of the things that cause you trouble and heartache wont’ be things you can prepare for. That life will blindside you. That no matter how much you worry it won’t help you.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the class of ’97:
Wear Sunscreen.
If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now
Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they’ve faded. But trust me, in 20 years, you’ll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine.
Don’t worry about the future, or worry, but know that worry is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind. The kind that blindside you at 4 p.m. on some idle Tuesday.
Do one thing every day that scares you.
Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts. Don’t put up with people who are reckless with yours.
Don’t waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes you’re behind. The race is long and, in the end, it’s only with yourself.
Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.
Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old bank statements.
Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn’t know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don’t.
Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees. You’ll miss them when they’re gone.
Maybe you’ll marry, maybe you won’t. Maybe you’ll have children, maybe you won’t. Maybe you’ll divorce at 40, maybe you’ll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don’t congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else’s.
Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don’t be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. It’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever own.
Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room.
Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them.
Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you feel ugly.
Get to know your parents. You never know when they’ll be gone for good. Be nice to your siblings. They’re your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.
Understand that friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young.
Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard. Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.
Accept certain inalienable truths: Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too, will get old. And when you do, you’ll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.
Respect your elders.
Don’t expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund. Maybe you’ll have a wealthy spouse. But you never know when either one might run out.
Don’t mess too much with your hair or by the time you’re 40 it will look 85.
Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it’s worth.

Attention getter : When I was a adult girl in my school days, skin care is my first priority as compared to any other work and as a girl I used take care of my skin and struggling with pimples and sun tan or you can sunburn which affects my face a lot.In my school days I was so interested in sports and I also participate in favorite game bollyball and get qualified in national and regional level for that I have to travel a lot so I always to keep my sunscreen with me but one day I forgetten by mistake and that day was the worst day of my life and my skin get affected a lot from that I decided to keep reminder i forgot anything or something but never my sunscreen and apply twice a day.
Speaker credibility : After the damage of my skin on that particular day I decided to do some research on how to prevent skin disease and learn more while doing research and come to know why it's so important. Due to research I come to know the Dermatologist of the country say that its cause due to effects of harmful ultra violet radiation from Sun and it also causes the skin cancer which is very dangerous and harmful.
Thesis: Directly facing the Sun all day without taking any protection like sunscreen will be very harmful for your skin and health also.
Preview : From the way this speech i just want to encourage you all to take care of skin body this is first priority by applying sunscreen twice a day because the radiation of sun affects every one either they are beautiful or not. Body is the gift of God which you have to take care and face and skin are to taken care by applying all available products in the market.There are different products for different types of skin so try according to it which suits your skin.
Transition: We all aware that sun light affects our skin so why we are not so serious about this?
BODY :
1.Evey human being gets affected by the harmful radiation of the sun but some people are not serious about their skin care and they need the sun protection the most.
(a) Some of the human being don't take care of their skin and they not so sensitive about the time they spend under the sunlight.
(I) Most of the people not apply sunscreen when go for morning walk or for some exercise which affects their skin.
(ii) The people don't apply sunscreen when they go near beaches and near rivers in the country like India where people who lives near rivers they don't apply skin protection which affects.
(iii) The harmful radiation of sun affects the skin mostly when sun is on its peak hours at day time.
2.There are lakhs of cases of skin diseases are found annually.
(I) Some of the people's are very serious about their skin and take all protections and precautions to safeguard their skin.
(ii) I have interacted with thousands of people in which only ten percent people said they uses sunscreen some of them refuses to uses the skin protection they believe that there is no such requirement of all thses people those who are affected with the consult of doctors can apply sunscreen with SPF of 15 or 20.
Transition: There is a very effective solution to this problem.
1.Applying sunscreen is very important and for most solution to skin problems and reduces the risk of so many skin issues.
2.Sunscreen is the only and easy medication to this problem how it can be done.
(I) sunscreen to be applied 30 minutes before go outside in the sunlight.
(ii) only a small quantity of sunscreen protection is enough for the day to safeguard your skin.
(iii) The women's should apply it on face and hands which part can't be covered with the clothes should be applied with sunscreen.
3.Sunscreen can protect the skin and have the quality to block the ultraviolet radiation which affects the skin.
"Choice of sunscreen is not a easy task"
(a) The most important thing we check in sunscreen pack is SPF that is sun factor protection which helps in protecting from skin diseases by ultraviolet rays.
(I) The SPF should be 15 which will protect fifteen times longer for skin to protect.
(ii) The clothes we wear only protects SPF of 5 which will not be possible when wet with the sweating.
(b) The sunscreen should be applied regularly as and when needed.
(c) It should be applied in all seasons even in winter also and while you are traveling either by own vehicle or by any other transport.
4.There are various types of sunscreen are available in the market for every type of skin.
(a) For sports lover the Gels are good choice
(b) For dry skin normal cream are very effective.
(c) For kids sprays and foams are good.
(d) For the people who sweat more a water proof cream should be used.
Transition:"Think if all people seriously take of their skin and prevent this kind of skin diseases"
1.There are so many proofs that reducing the exposure of ultraviolet radiation will reduce the risk of so many skin diseases.
(a) Every year lakhs of people suffer from serious skin diseases and some think that their skin is older damaged and wrinkled.
(I) .There are many kinds of skin diseases which can prevented and treated.
(ii) .Just with some precautions the unnecessary skin diseases and damages can stopped and prevented very effective.
2.Latest study has shown that the effects of not using sunscreen.
(a) which causes the high rates of sunburn and skin cancer which cannot be cured.
(b) Not applying sunscreen may increases the number of skin affected people.
Summary : So taking care of skin is your responsibility and duty. Not using sunscreen is just like going for a drive on a bike without helmet which is foremost protection, you know that taking precautions is better then cure so remember this and apply it.
Concluding Statement : At last in my conclusion I just want to say that take care of yourself which is your responsibility and dont allow any unnecessary diseases to affect you. All its preventions are in your own hand only you just have to go to the market or you can purchase it online which protects you from harmful radiation of sunlight. So apply the sunscreen daily when ever go outside for any kind of work. Just take care of your self then everything will be alright it said that health is wealth so apply in your life and enjoy life is very beautiful.

One of our favorite words of all time is the Wear Sunscreen Commencement Speech by Mary Schmich , which contains quite a lot of doable advice on navigating the murky waters of life.

Thank you for sharing this philosophical piece about living life. It’s true that no one really knows the best kind of advice when it comes to that. It’s not as easy to scientifically verify as “wear sunscreen” and actually even some kinds of sunscreen were proven harmful.
One of my friends talks about a book called the half-life of facts. It shows how at one point something was considered fact but then it turned out not to be. So “wear sunscreen” might not be a fact any more. Or as long as you specify to wear natural sunscreen and not with chemicals? But that “fact” could have a half-life too.
One of my favorite phrases is to be gentle with yourself. I feel like being gentle with yourself is a good way to live. I don’t like when people give advice like “get out of your comfort zone”. I never had a comfort zone and I always lived a very chaotic life since I was young. So for me I need to practice being comfortable with being comfortable.

Hi Charles, yes. It’s really funny because of all the advice given, I think the sunscreen is the one that’s been debunked quite firmly – unless you’re using organic and DEET-free ones. Just goes to show how quickly times change.

Topic : The importance of wearing sunscreen Target Audience : General public General goal : To persuade Specific goal : To persuade general public about the importance of wearning sunscreen for skin health purpose Thesis Statement : General public need to wear sunscreen because it can helps against the visible signs of premature aging, reduce risk of skin cancer, prevent from sunburn.
INTRODUCTION
What you know about wearing sunscreen? Why you need to wear sunscreen? Sunscreen is to help shield the skin from harm that caused by exposure to the sun and helps protect against UVA and UVB rays. Sunscreen can also temporarily prevent the development of wrinkles, dark spots and sagging skin by using it constantly for all ages, genders, and skin types. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), most people only apply 25- 50% of the recommended amount of sunscreen and only 14% of men and 29% of women regularly use sunscreen on their face and others exposed skin (American Academy of Dermatology, 2019).
TRANSITION: (I have already explain about what is sunscreen. Now, let’s begin with the first point which is sunscreen can prevent you from sunburn.)
- Sunscreen can prevent from sunburn A. Skin without sunscreen and unprotected will burn faster or more severely when index of UV is high. The danger of sunburn goes far beyond any short- term pain, redness and discomfort because after the sunburn fades the lasting damage remains. B. Next, be careful especially when the sun is strongest. However, even when the index is low, the risk remains so you must constantly apply sunscreen when needed. People who get sunburned usually the one who did not use enough sunscreen and reapply it after being in the sun. Therefore, whether you are on vacation or taking a walk in your neighborhood, remember to use sunscreen. C. According to the Better Health Channel, when skin is exposed to UV radiation, more melanin is produced, causing the skin to darken and tan. A tan is a sign that the skin has been damaged from UV radiation as melanin works by darkening your unprotected sun-exposed skin (Better Health Channel, 2016).
TRANSITION: (I have already tell you about the first point. Now, move to the next point which is sunscreen can reduce the risk of skin cancer.)
- Sunscreen can reduce the risk of skin cancer A. A frequent use of sunscreen can protect your skin against the sun’s broad spectrum of harmful UV rays. Yet, excessive sun exposure without sunscreen can increase the risk of skin cancer and damage the DNA of skin cells. It mainly develops on areas of the body that are most exposed to sunlight such as the face, neck, chest, arms, hands and legs and it can be recognize as Melanoma. B. Melanoma is known to be extremely aggressive and can be life-threatening for many people particularly those in their 20s. It spreads through the bloodstream and can become life-threatening in as little as six weeks and if untreated, it can spread to other parts of the body. Thus, sunscreen is very important to your skin since it can reduce the risk of skin cancer.
