For many people the thought of delivering a presentation is a daunting task and brings about a  great deal of nerves . However, if you take some time to understand how effective presentations are structured and then apply this structure to your own presentation, you’ll appear much more confident and relaxed.

Why is structuring a presentation so important?

If you’ve ever sat through a great presentation, you’ll have left feeling either inspired or informed on a given topic. This isn’t because the speaker was the most knowledgeable or motivating person in the world. Instead, it’s because they know how to structure presentations – they have crafted their message in a logical and simple way that has allowed the audience can keep up with them and take away key messages.

Research has supported this, with studies showing that audiences retain structured information  40% more accurately  than unstructured information.

In fact, not only is structuring a presentation important for the benefit of the audience’s understanding, it’s also important for you as the speaker. A good structure helps you remain calm, stay on topic, and avoid any awkward silences.

Generally speaking, there is a natural flow that any decent presentation will follow which we will go into shortly. However, you should be aware that all presentation structures will be different in their own unique way and this will be due to a number of factors, including:

  • Provide a statement of what you’re hoping the outcome of the presentation will be, for example, “I’m hoping this will be provide you with…”

Guy Kawasaki, an entrepreneur and author, suggests that slideshows should follow a  10-20-30 rule :

  • There should be a maximum of 10 slides – people rarely remember more than one concept afterwards so there’s no point overwhelming them with unnecessary information.
  • The presentation should last no longer than 20 minutes as this will leave time for questions and discussion.
  • The font size should be a minimum of 30pt because the audience reads faster than you talk so less information on the slides means that there is less chance of the audience being distracted.

Group Presentations

Group presentations are structured in the same way as presentations with one speaker but usually require more rehearsal and practices.  Clean transitioning between speakers  is very important in producing a presentation that flows well. One way of doing this consists of:

  • Briefly recap on what you covered in your section: “So that was a brief introduction on what health anxiety is and how it can affect somebody”
  • Introduce the next speaker in the team and explain what they will discuss: “Now Elnaz will talk about the prevalence of health anxiety.”
  • Then end by looking at the next speaker, gesturing towards them and saying their name: “Elnaz”.
  • The next speaker should acknowledge this with a quick: “Thank you Joe.”

From this example you can see how the different sections of the presentations link which makes it easier for the audience to follow and remain engaged.

Having examples of great presentations will help inspire your own structures, here are a few such examples, each unique and inspiring in their own way.

How Google Works – by Eric Schmidt

This presentation by ex-Google CEO  Eric Schmidt  demonstrates some of the most important lessons he and his team have learnt with regards to working with some of the most talented individuals they hired. The simplistic yet cohesive style of all of the slides is something to be appreciated. They are relatively straightforward, yet add power and clarity to the narrative of the presentation.

Start with why – by Simon Sinek

Since being released in 2009, this presentation has been viewed almost four million times all around the world. The message itself is very powerful, however, it’s not an idea that hasn’t been heard before. What makes this presentation so powerful is the simple message he is getting across, and the straightforward and understandable manner in which he delivers it. Also note that he doesn’t use any slides, just a whiteboard where he creates a simple diagram of his opinion.

The Wisdom of a Third Grade Dropout – by Rick Rigsby

Here’s an example of a presentation given by a relatively unknown individual looking to inspire the next generation of graduates. Rick’s presentation is unique in many ways compared to the two above. Notably, he uses no visual prompts and includes a great deal of humour.

However, what is similar is the structure he uses. He first introduces his message that the wisest man he knew was a third-grade dropout. He then proceeds to deliver his main body of argument, and in the end, concludes with his message. This powerful speech keeps the viewer engaged throughout, through a mixture of heart-warming sentiment, powerful life advice and engaging humour.

As you can see from the examples above, and as it has been expressed throughout, a great presentation structure means analysing the core message of your presentation. Decide on a key message you want to impart the audience with, and then craft an engaging way of delivering it.

By preparing a solid structure, and  practising your talk  beforehand, you can walk into the presentation with confidence and deliver a meaningful message to an interested audience.

It’s important for a presentation to be well-structured so it can have the most impact on your audience. An unstructured presentation can be difficult to follow and even frustrating to listen to. The heart of your speech are your main points supported by evidence and your transitions should assist the movement between points and clarify how everything is linked.

Research suggests that the audience remember the first and last things you say so your introduction and conclusion are vital for reinforcing your points. Essentially, ensure you spend the time structuring your presentation and addressing all of the sections.

Getting ready to present in English? Here’s how to make sure your introduction for a presentation in English is successful.

But first… When you think about a presentation, I know you’re thinking about something like a TED video or a presentation at a conference. You’re thinking about a speech, with PowerPoint slides and a big audience.

But did you know we use the same skills when we share new information or ideas with our work colleagues? Or when we tell stories to our friends and family? The situation or speaking task may be different but we still use the same skills.

When presenting information or telling stories, we need to:

  • Capture a listener’s attention
  • Share information, ideas, or opinions
  • Give the important details
  • Make your information memorable
  • Get your audience (family, friends, colleagues or strangers) to agree, to take action, to change their mind, etc.

So today you’re going to learn how to take the first big step in your English presentation: how to start with a great introduction.

The introduction is the most important part of your presentation. It is the first impression you’ll make on your audience. It’s your first opportunity to get their attention. You want them to trust you and listen to you right away.

However, that first moment when you start to speak is often the hardest. Knowing how to best prepare and knowing what to say will help you feel confident and ready to say that first word and start your presentation in English.

Organize Your Introduction Correctly

Okay, first let’s focus on what you need to include in your English introduction. Think of this as your formula for a good introduction. Using this general outline for your introduction will help you prepare. It will also help your audience know who you are, why you’re an expert, and what to expect from your presentation.

Use this general outline for your next presentation:

  • Welcome your audience and introduce yourself
  • Capture their attention
  • Identify your number one goal or topic of presentation
  • Give a quick outline of your presentation
  • Provide instructions for how to ask questions (if appropriate for your situation)

Use Common Language to Make Your Introduction Easy to Understand

Great, now you have the general outline of an introduction for a speech or presentation in English. So let’s focus on some of the key expressions you can use for each step. This will help you think about what to say and how to say it so you can sound confident and prepared in your English presentation.

“The introduction is the most important part of your presentation. It is the first impression you’ll make on your audience. It’s your first opportunity to get their attention. You want them to trust you and listen to you right away.”

Welcome Your Audience & Introduction

It is polite to start with a warm welcome and to introduce yourself. Everyone in the audience will want to know who you are. Your introduction should include your name and job position or the reason you are an expert on your topic. The more the audience trusts you, the more they listen.

  • Welcome to [name of company or event]. My name is [name] and I am the [job title or background information].
  • Thank you for coming today. I’m [name] and I’m looking forward to talking with you today about [your topic].
  • Good morning/afternoon ladies and gentlemen. I’d like to quickly introduce myself. I am [name] from [company or position]. (formal)
  • On behalf of [name of company], I’d like to welcome you today. For those of you who don’t already know me, my name is [name] and I am [job title or background]. (formal)
  • Hi everyone. I’m [name and background]. I’m glad to be here with you today. Now let’s get started. (informal)

Capture Their Attention

For more information about how to best capture your audience’s attention and why, please see the next session below. However, here are a few good phrases to get you started.

  • Did you know that [insert an interesting fact or shocking statement]?
  • Have you ever heard that [insert interesting fact or shocking statement]?
  • Before I start, I’d like to share a quick story about [tell your story]…
  • I remember [tell your story, experience or memory]…
  • When I started preparing for this talk, I was reminded of [tell your story, share your quote or experience]…

Identify Your Goal or Topic of Presentation

At this stage, you want to be clear with your audience about your primary topic or goal. Do you want your audience to take action after your talk? Is it a topic everyone is curious about (or should be curious about)? This should be just one or two sentences and it should be very clear.

  • This morning I’d like to present our new [product or service].
  • Today I’d like to discuss…
  • Today I’d like to share with you…
  • What I want to share with you is…
  • My goal today is to help you understand…
  • During my talk this morning/afternoon, I’ll provide you with some background on [main topic] and why it is important to you.
  • I will present my findings on…
  • By the end of my presentation, I’d like for you to know…
  • I aim to prove to you / change your mind about…
  • I’d like to take this opportunity to talk about…
  • As you know, this morning/afternoon I’ll be discussing…

Outline Your Presentation

You may have heard this about presentations in English before:

First, tell me what you’re going to tell me. Then tell me. And finally, tell me what you told me.

It sounds crazy and weird, but it’s true. This is how we structure presentations in English. So today we’re focusing on the “First, tell me what you’re going to tell me” for your introduction. This means you should outline the key points or highlights of your topic.

This prepares your listens and helps to get their attention. It will also help them follow your presentation and stay focused. Here are some great phrases to help you do that.

  • First, I’m going to present… Then I’ll share with you… Finally, I’ll ask you to…
  • The next thing I’ll share with you is…
  • In the next section, I’ll show you…
  • Today I will be covering these 3 (or 5) key points…
  • In this presentation, we will discuss/evaluate…
  • By the end of this presentation, you’ll be able to…
  • My talk this morning is divided into [number] main sections… First, second, third… Finally…

On Asking Questions

You want to be sure to let you audience know when and how it is appropriate for them to ask you questions. For example, is the presentation informal and is it okay for someone to interrupt you with a question? Or do you prefer for everyone to wait until the end of the presentation to ask questions?

  • If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to interrupt me. I’m happy to answer any questions as we go along.
  • Feel free to ask any questions, however, I do ask that you wait until the end of the presentation to ask.
  • There will be plenty of time for questions at the end.
  • Are there any questions at this point? If not, we’ll keep going.
  • I would be happy to answer any questions you may have now.

Capture Your Audience’s Attention

Do you feel unsure about how to capture the attention of your audience? Don’t worry! Here are some common examples used in English-speaking culture for doing it perfectly!

Two of the most famous speakers in the English-speaking world are Steve Jobs and Oprah Winfrey. While Steve Jobs is no longer living, people still love to watch his speeches and presentations online. Oprah is so famous that no matter what she does, people are excited to see her and listen to her.

BUT, if you listen to a speech by Steve Jobs or Oprah Winfrey,  they still  work  to get your attention!

The don’t start with a list of numbers or data. They don’t begin with a common fact or with the title of the presentation. No – they do much more.

From the moment they start their speech, they want you to listen. And they find interesting ways to get your attention. In his most famous speeches, Steve Jobs often started with a personal story. And Oprah often starts with an inspiring quote, a motivational part of a poem, or a personal story.

These are all great ways to help your audience to listen to you immediately – whether your presentation is 3 minutes or 20 minutes.

Here’s how you can do it.

Like Steve Jobs or Oprah Winfrey, start with a:

  • Personal story or experience
  • Motivational quote or line from a poem or book
  • Joke (be careful with this – make sure it translates easily to everyone in the audience!)
  • Shocking, bold statement (Think of Steve Jobs’ quote: “ Stay hungry. Stay Foolish .”)
  • Rhetorical question ( =a question that you don’t want an answer to; the focus is to make someone think)

And finally, consider audience participation. Ask a question and get your audience to respond by raising hands.

It has definitely become more common to skip the greeting and go straight to capturing the attention of the audience and you’re right that we often see this in TED talks. I would say it’s best to know your audience and what might be expected. For example, at more formal, traditional conferences or lecture, it might be more appropriate to start with a welcome. A successful business presentation requires careful planning and structuring. In this article, we will look at presentation structure, focusing on the three parts: Introduction, main body, and conclusion of a presentation. A successful presentation needs a well-structured agenda. It helps your audience to keep track and follow the content of the presentation. The agenda ensures that all important aspects of a topic are covered in the presentation.

An attractively designed and worded agenda can also help to capture the audience’s attention right from the start and get them excited about the presentation. For example, the agenda can be designed using images, language, or terminology that is specific to the audience’s goals and interests. In this way, the presenter signals that they value the audience’s time and interest and are tailoring their presentation to meet their needs. 1. Greeting:

Diagrams, icons, and images are quicker to grasp than columns of scrubs, and you’ll stick in their minds. Your audience is more likely to remember a good picture than the text on your slides.

After the main part, you should have achieved the following with your audience:

  • The audience has understood your information and your arguments
  • You have answered or anticipated your audience’s most important questions and objections
  • The audience has recognized the relevance of the topic for their own needs and requirements
  • The audience is ready to take the next step toward your goal.

The conclusion of your presentation should be about 10% to 15% of the total duration of the presentation and include the following elements:

Summarize the most important points of your presentation again in a short and concise way. This will remind the audience of the key messages and strengthen your overall impression.

2. Call-to-action

Conclude your presentation with a call-to-action that fits your presentation objective. Ask the audience to make a decision, buy a product, or schedule a follow-up appointment with you. This will create commitment and ensure that your presentation objective is achieved.

Give an outlook on future developments or projects. Show the next steps or point out follow-up topics. By doing so, you show that you know the processes and are also an expert for the next steps and implementation.

4. Thank you

Conclude your presentation by thanking the audience. Show your appreciation for the interest and time the audience invested in your presentation. You can also include your contact information and offer to answer questions or provide further information. The thank you note should come from you in person; you don’t need a slide for that. The introduction is one of the most important parts of any presentation. A good introduction will explain to the audience why you are speaking to them, establish your credibility, and inspire them to listen.

The first rule of introductions is- don’t wait until you are in front of the audience to introduce yourself.

Arrive at the venue early and engage audience members as they enter the room .

There is rarely enough time for more than a 2-minute exchange. However, using that time to get to know the people you will be speaking to will set your presentation up for success. This early introduction serves as a classic ice breaker. First, you can familiarize yourself with audience members and also get them interested in what you are presenting. Second, you can find out something about each person you talk to, this adds a personal touch to your presentation, allows you to gain insight into the audience, and focuses attention on them.

Remember, people like to talk about themselves, so the more you focus on them , the more interested they will be in you and your presentation. Also, by meeting people early you will be able to recognize a few friendly faces in the crowd during the presentation, which has the benefit of helping to calm your nerves.

Lastly, this gives you one last opportunity to identify and/or confirm objectives. Ideally, you have gained enough information during your pre-work to clearly identify the needs and objectives of the people in the room . If this is the case, you should ask a few questions to confirm that the objectives you plan to focus on are still current. For example, “I understand that your team is looking for a new process that results in less warranty issues, is that correct?”

If you were unable to properly identify objectives during the research phase, this is your second chance. Ask a few open-ended questions as you introduce yourself to people, and before the presentation begins. For example, you may simply ask, “What are you hoping to get out of today’s presentation?” Although you won’t be able to change the content of your presentation, you can change how it is delivered and add information relevant to the new found objective(s).

As part of the introduction, your first goal should be to set the stage for the audience by explaining why you are presenting.

Once you have started to earn the audience’s respect you need to establish yourself as a knowledgeable professional on the topic you are presenting.

Establish your expertise

For example, start by telling the audience your name and background. For example, when speaking on a technical topic, I typically begin by telling the audience I am a geotechnical engineer with a master’s degree. I continue by explaining my role at the company and how many years I have been working in the industry. This both gives the audience some insight into me as a person, and continues the process of developing rapport between us.

While you don’t want to present yourself as arrogant, be aware not to humble yourself. People are in the audience to meet you and learn from your presentation. Because you are standing in front of them, they are more likely to believe you are more of an expert than they are on the topic. Therefore, if you say something like, “I’m not an expert in automotive parts”, but then continue to present automotive parts, you are likely to lose the audience in the first few minutes.

The line between presenting yourself as humble or arrogant can be fine. However, to be successful, you need to walk it. The best way that I have learned to do this is to have confidence that you are sharing information that you are an expert in and that it is valuable to the audience. At the same time, remember that each person in the audience is an expert in something else. This exercise helps you to not talk down to your audience while allowing you to build or maintain your own confidence in the subject matter you are speaking on.

It isn’t enough, however, to explain your why you are there and tell them about your expertise on the presentation topic. You need to engage them.

Now that the audience is feeling more comfortable with you, inspire them to listen. I recommend that you share your why with the audience. On a side note, if you haven’t developed your why , grab Simon Sinek’s book, “Start with Why,” and start working on it. Your why is the reason you do what you do. There are two reasons to include your why . First, by definition, your why inspires you. By repeating your why aloud, you will be more positive and confident simply because you just reminded yourself why you are there. Second, you continue to build a relationship with the audience. The more a person can relate to you and feels that they know you, the more apt they are to like you. By sharing your why , you capture the part of the audience that relates to your why , and open yourself to the audience by providing insight into you as a person.

One of the benefits of introducing yourself to audience members as they enter the room is that you can relate your why to one or more parts of your early conversation. For example, I enjoy helping people, planning, and solving problems. At a recent presentation, a few people shared their upcoming vacation plans with me. I used this to generate a more meaningful why to that audience by saying, “On the way in, Patrick was telling me about his frustrations in booking a trip to the Bahamas. I have always loved planning and helping people solve problems. In fact, I just organized a trip for 10 of my friends to Panama because I love problem solving in my personal life just as much as my professional life. Although I’m not here to plan your vacation, I’m going to present a few solutions that may help you in your business so your next vacation is more relaxing.” Although short, this introduction gives your audience insight into you as a person and gives them insight into your why .

At this point, you’ve successfully established the connection between you and the audience, and explained why you are there. Now you need to lay-out the logistics of the presentation. A guide to letting the audience know what to expect will be presented in the next blog.

How to start a presentation with impact and get engagement from the get-go is a question that anyone who delivers presentations has asked themselves in the past. The start of the presentation is seen by many ask the most important part of the overall presentation, as this is where initial engagement is generated.

A presentation has three parts – the start, the middle and the end. This article looks at how to get maximum engagement at the start of a presentation using a model or structure called INTRO. This will help you to understand how to start a presentation.

Why Structure the Start of Your Presentation?

Nerves can sometimes get the better of us when delivering a presentation, so knowing exactly how to start a presentation and what you will do in the first few minutes can help you reduce your nervousness.

We also want to generate engagement immediately. The audience wants to know quickly what the presentation is about and what they will get from it. If the beginning of your presentation is confusing or not clear, the audience will quickly lose interest.

How to Start a Presentation

You can use the INTRO model to help start your presentation and give it some structure. INTRO stands for  Interest , Need , Title , Range , and Objectives. Here is what it means and what to do at each stage.

The first stage is to capture the audience’s interest and attention. Think of something you can do at the beginning of your presentation; for example, tell a story, use statistics, or show a short video clip or a powerful image.  You want the audience to look at this, listen to what you have to say, and become captivated. Whatever you do must be linked to the overall content of the presentation.

Presenting yourself well is also something to consider here. You will need to consider your body language, tone of voice and the words you use.

Why does your audience need to be there?  What are the reasons why you have decided to do a presentation?  One big reason audiences don’t engage with presentations is that they don’t always understand why they are there. Link the need to the interest and use statements such as ‘and this is why we are here today’.

Give your presentation a title that is linked to the content.  Sometimes avoiding the obvious can generate more interest.  So, for example, ‘A Presentation About Sales Figures’ describes what you are about to present, but it’s not engaging, creative or indeed linked to the outcomes of your presentation. Try something like ‘How We Will Increase Our Sales This Quarter’.

Range (Agenda)

Ensure you cover the range of topics or the agenda. Build on your interest and need, and be sure to paint a picture of how your presentation will fit together and help with the need.

What are the objectives of the presentation?  Help the audience understand what they will get from the presentation and will take away with them. Start your objectives with a statement such as ‘by the end of this presentation, you will…’ then create objectives for your presentation. Use words such as know, be able to, have the knowledge, understand etc. Let them see that there is some value to your presentation, and that the presentation is a good use of their time.

Structuring the start of your presentation can help reduce nerves, increase your confidence levels and engage the audience more quickly. It’s worth taking the time to think about how to start a presentation to make sure your presentation is a success.

The article presents the results of the preliminary survey and pilot application of the methodological toolkit for the improvement of certain competencies, which are part of the soft skills of professionals in the long-term care sector in Bulgaria. Based on the survey the authors define 2 target competencies, namely conflict management and empathic interaction. These skills are considered a part of the scope of emotional intelligence and its constituent dimensions and authors use Daniel Goleman’s ability-based model as a base for their conceptual frame and theoretical explanations. In order to present their thesis, the authors perform a soft skill analysis of the long-term care sector; define the construct emotional intelligence and justify their choice of a theoretical model for the subsequent survey. On this basis, they develop a training design for the development of these skills and present the results achieved through its pilot application. The study includes 62 participants randomly divided into a test and control groups. The level of targeted skills is measured (before and after) and the authors report a significant increase in those skills (empathic interaction, net effect 1.87; conflict management, net effect 1.75). In conclusion, the authors open a discussion on the importance of emotional management as an essential part of any profession related to health care and underline its importance for the quality of caregiving services.

Introduction

One of the most apparent challenges in the long-term care sector is the provision of trained staff who can deliver quality customer care services. To date, the training of professionals in the sector has been focused almost entirely on hard skills, those competencies used in patient care, which are specific to the practice and are rooted in science such as medicine and gerontology. These skills are vital to improving the health and physical performance of patients, but insufficient in terms of an improvement in quality of life and patient/relative satisfaction. 1 In actual fact, the poor quality of service in this sector is not so much due to a lack of hard skills, but more often to a deficiency in the development of soft skills. Indeed, it is difficult to define or measure the human faculties we call soft skills, which care giving professionals must enhance in order to interact with patients and their loved ones. The enrichment of soft skills will go a long way to achieving the “caregiving environment” which we are familiar with from the specialized literature. The need for soft skills is considerably more than merely giving information about health status or explaining medical procedure. Soft skills include the ability of professionals to be patient, to manage conflicts, to show empathy, and so on. But the truth is that these skills are either not studied, or at best remain in the periphery of the training that prepares specialists to work with patients. The increasing awareness of the need for such skills provokes a number of authors to search for answers within the popular concept of emotional intelligence. To date, we are witnessing more and more efforts to relate certain skills of emotional intelligence to patient satisfaction, 2 physical and psychological well-being, 3 and last but not least the level of work performance of health care professionals. 4 From our perspective, advancement in soft skills will yield the most when we focus on skills directly related to emotionality which are part of the scope of Emotional Intelligence. In this article, we represent our point of view that they are the ones that play a key role in building a caregiver-patient relationship.

Main Soft Competencies in the Sector of Long-Term Care

In order to define the competencies that comprise the soft skills matrix of professionals in the long-term care sector, we conducted research and analyzed different sources of information. 5 - 7

According to this studies the long-term caregivers are able to provide the highest level of care when they have the soft skills needed to cooperate effectively with the patient, his or her relatives, and other health care professionals (attending physician, general practitioner, rehabilitator, social worker, etc). These skills are vital for the recovery of patients in physiological and social terms. And as much as there is agreement about the role and importance of soft skills in patient care, there are quite different opinions as to what the main competencies are.

According to a list of nursing competencies presented by Zhi-Xue Zhang, the main soft skills vary from interpersonal understanding and commitment to information gathering and self-control, to responsiveness and critical thinking. 8

Other authors add empathy to the list, as they claim that patients increasingly define the ability to “put ourselves in others’ shoes” as a leading factor in patient care, both in domestic and institutional settings. 9 - 11

A third group of authors focuses on the importance of conflict management and stress management skills and underline the importance of those skill for maintaining relationships with the patient and his family. 12 - 14

After a detailed analysis of the aforementioned and other literary sources, we found that the list of soft skills is very long. This made it practically difficult to apply it as a starting point for improvement initiatives targeting a specific set of behaviors—the ones that influence the patient’s psychological sense of care the most. Thus emerged the need, before moving on to the development of soft skills, to conduct an initial study to identify those competencies that are perceived as most important for consumers in Bulgaria. The logic behind that was that by narrowing the scope of these abilities and bringing them down to a few, we would be able to customize the methodology through which those few key skills could be developed with priority. In order to execute that, we created a questionnaire consisting of 12 questions, asking to prioritize the importance of different soft skills ( Appendix 1 ). Before using it with a group of 64 randomly chosen patients, we conducted 2 rounds of validation (feasibility). The first round with a group of health care professionals and the second one with patients and family members. Although the purpose of the questionnaire was not to generate accurate statistics on patients’ attitudes, the results from it helped us navigate and select those two competencies that were identified by them as the most significant.

The survey results show that there are 2 skills of primary significance. First, the ability to de-escalate conflicts, and Second, empathy and compassion. These 2 competencies are strongly related to emotional intelligence and as a key finding of the survey, they formed the goal of the following training activities. A goal that was redirected from learning soft skills, as it was initially planned, toward an increase of emotional intelligence and its constituent dimensions.

Emotional Intelligence: Definition of the Concept, Justification of a Conceptual Model

Perhaps few people know that the words emotional and intelligence first appeared together as a collocation in a scholarly text as long ago as 1964. Then Michael Beldoch 15 used the collocation to describe the ability of people to communicate their own emotions. Despite being a little-known reality today, most people are at least aware of the fact that there is such a concept. Daniel Goleman, who published his book Emotional Intelligence 16 in 1996, is largely responsible for raising public awareness.

With this seminal work, he was the precursor for the wave of publications and studies which followed, focusing on intelligent emotion, its essence, scope, and application in different spheres of human life.

Since then, there can barely be a specialist working in any aspect of science related to human behavior who is not familiar with the term emotional intelligence.

However, in order to refine what we mean by emotional intelligence, and also to avoid the ambiguity resulting from the numerous models conceptualizing the construct, we should make the effort in this article to formulate a theoretical model and provide a definition.

After examining the numerous models that have attempted a theory of emotional intelligence, we have chosen the model created by Daniel Goleman (the ability-based model). Of the foremost reasons for our choice was the conceptual framework created by the author, who views emotional intelligence as a constellation of different abilities, similar to the way in which competency models are an interconnection of certain skills. This is not the case for other theoretical models in which the characteristics of emotional intelligence are regarded as personal traits, that is, as persistent personal characteristics of the individual. 17 Moreover, the arrangement of these abilities in the theoretical framework presented by Goleman corresponded to a great extent with the soft skills constituting the competence model of long-term care used in the Republic of Bulgaria. These skills are presented as parts of relatively independent domains, which is not the case in other theoretical models, and in a number abilities are organized hierarchically. 18 Finally, as the most important factor in choosing the ability based model, we should highlight the findings made after analyzing the result from the survey and the soft skill areas that are identified as the most important for the patients.

In terms of defining the term we have dealt with the definition given by Goleman, which states that emotional intelligence is The capacity for recognizing our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, and for managing emotions well in ourselves and in our relationships . 19

The Goleman model presents emotional intelligence as a constellation of different abilities that are divided into 2 major domains. The first is the domain of personal skills (how we manage ourselves). This largely consists of 3 dimensions: self-awareness; self-regulation; motivation. According to Goleman, these abilities are associated with the way the individual manages and masters his own emotions.

The second domain, which is more important in the context of our goals and tasks, is that of social skills (how we manage our relationships). Social skills can be analyzed by observing the manner in which individuals interact on an emotional level with others. As we know this is the essence of relationship management. This domain includes

Empathy, which is examined by several different aspects covering both the affective and the cognitive part of the skill

Social skills, that include the ability to build relationships, influence communication, and perhaps most important, conflict management and conflict resolution. 20

When creating his model of emotional intelligence, Goleman emphasizes that for each profession especially those which engage with people, the abilities listed at 1 and 2 are of the utmost importance.
