Toggling [ ]

Experimental Gameplay is found in the world options when creating or editing a world. When turning the option on in an existing world, a copy of the world will be created automatically. Turning the option on disables achievements after the world is created. Once the experimental world is created, it cannot be turned off again. Worlds with the experimental on will have an "Experimental" tag right next to the game mode name in the world menu.

Warnings [ ]

Experimental Gameplay Load

The warning message when attempting to play on an experimental world.

The point of Experimental Gameplay is for the player to look at some not-quite-finished features, which could crash, break, or stop working at any point in future updates. When the player attempts to load the experimental world, it will show a warning message before loading it. Attempting to disable experimental gameplay toggle via external tools could also crash and break the world.

It is recommended to create back up copies of the world when playing on experimental, or not enabling experimental toggle on to avoid breaking the world and having issues in future updates.

Features (Bedrock Edition) [ ]

There are 8 different toggles of Experimental Gameplay on Bedrock Edition. [1] [2] These are:

Additional content [ ]

  • Enables add-ons features added on the holiday update and some further updates that include the creation of custom blocks and items, Molang enhancements and the run_command method. This toggle will soon be removed from Bedrock Edition entirely, thus breaking add-ons using these features, mostly block and item events.
  • Enables custom biomes by using add-ons.
  • Used for Volume Driven Fog and entity properties and permutations.
  • Enables the usage for "-beta" versions of API modules in add-on packs.
  • Enables experimental Molang features.
  • Enables the / camera command and its features.
  • Introducing new experimental cross-platform graphics features for creators

Gameplay [ ]

  • Overhauled trades for Villager and Wandering Trader
  • Internal (staff only) experimental features (NON_LOC)
  • Enables the experimental bundle item.

Internal Testing ( Developer Edition only) [ ]

  • Allow changing seed
  • Load Blocks generated by the Minecraft Explorer (NON_LOC)

Features (Java Edition) [ ]

Experimental Features in Minecraft: Bedrock Edition

  • 5 contributors

To see full documentation about experimental features and APIs, select the Minecraft Bedrock Experimental APIs option or use this link .

image showing the Document Versions Dropdown.

With each retail version of Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, there are a few features that are currently in an experimental state. Experimental Features can be toggled on for creators who are interested in testing the latest features offered in the preview, and retail versions of Minecraft.

The Experiments toggle list is subject to frequent changes and could have entirely different options from the ones in your own version of Minecraft. Also, the screen shots shown here might look different.

Experimental Features available in Minecraft: Bedrock Edition

There are two sets of experimental features available, depending on whether you are using a retail version of Minecraft or the latest version of Minecraft Preview.

These are the currently available Experimental toggles in the 1.21.20 retail build at the time of this writing.

GAMEPLAY - Change the way your world works

ADD-ON CREATORS - For creators of game packs and other add-ons

These are the currently available Experimental toggles in the 1.21.20.23 preview build at the time of this writing.

How do I activate an Experimental Features toggle for my world?

You can activate an experimental toggle for any of your new or existing worlds.

Activating experimental features that are still under development means that your world might crash, break, or not work with future updates.

If you're planning to build content that you want to share with the community, it would be best to do it in a non-experimental world.

Toggle Experimental Features in a New World

If you are building a new world from scratch to test experimental features, you can toggle which features you want enabled in the Game Settings.

Under Game settings, navigate down to Experiments and select a toggle to enable the feature.

Image showcasing 4 toggles for experimental features available in Minecraft

When you get the popup asking if you're sure, select Turn on Experiments anyway .

image showing a pop up to confirm if you want to activate experimental features in Minecraft.

Toggle Experimental Features in an Existing World

If you want to add experimental features to an existing world, open that world's game settings and activate the toggles just like you would for a new world.

A copy of your world will be generated automatically after you activate an experimental feature toggle. You can also manually create copies of your world as an extra precaution, in case something goes wrong.

After you select Activate Experiments , a copy of your existing world will be created. The copy will have the same name as the original world with "Copy of..." added in front of it.

image showing a duplicated world

Verify that the World has Experimental Features Enabled

After you've created a world that has an experimental feature toggle enabled, your world will get a tag next to the game mode in your Worlds list that says Experimental .

image showcasing a survival world that has the Experimental tag applied

Another way to identify if your world is using experimental toggles is to visit the settings for your world. In the Game world settings, scroll down to the Experiments section to see which experiments are enabled.

Worlds that use experimental features cannot be restored to a non-experimental state.

Top 5 Minecraft Science Experiments

An ender portal made of obsidian blocks in Minecraft

Sure, the world of Minecraft can be a pretty dark place. Old, abandoned fortresses, strange urban legends , maybe even a Slender Man or two. But the best thing about Minecraft is that it’s effectively a virtual box of LEGOs.

You can build whatever you want. Sprawling castles, underground railways, working computers. And, yeah, you and Steve can even perform your own virtual Minecraft science experiments.

Here are my top five Minecraft science experiments, in no particular order. Disclaimer, though: these may or may not involve actual science. You have been warned.

5. The Elaborate Minecraft Experiment

Okay, so I’m not sure what hypothesis was being put to the test in this one. But YouTube user John Fredrik Rian ordered some science from the science place, and then some really intense stuff happened. And sheep. For science!

4. Gravity Experiments

What’s the explosive velocity of a TNT block, and how far will it fall? Does water slow the rate at which an object will fall? How about lava? This video answers these questions and more, thanks to Steve_OH’s quest to uncover the scientific secrets of Minecraft’s universe .

3. The Enderman Experiment

What do we really know about the elusive Enderman? These tall, black creatures with purple eyes and long, slender limbs stalk the darker areas of Minecraft, picking up blocks and wandering in a kind of lifeless daze. But one look and they can become a terrible threat.

This special Halloween video takes a look at the mysterious Ender Pearl, and provides an analysis of Enderman test subject TS-14. What secrets do these creatures hold?

2. The Large Chicken Collider

Particle accelerators like CERN’s Large Hadron Collider smash particles together in an attempt to recreate the conditions of the early universe. The Large Chicken Collider, on the other hand, smashes chickens together in an attempt to recreate the conditions of…two chickens smashed together.

“The chickens disappeared in an explosion. this leads me to conclude that annihilation occurred, therefore one of the chickens is infact an antichicken.” – imranhamid99

The plot thickens!

1. The Double-Slit Experiment

And at the top spot, the pinnacle, it’s the one, the only: the double-slit experiment. With chickens. Witness the wave-particule duality of flying chickens as they’re propelled through two cobblestone slits. It’s all very sophisticated.

“Here at the Spoon Monkey Institute we are dedicated to pushing the boundaries of Minecraft science.”

So there you go. Minecraft, science, the perfect mix. And if you know of any other cool Minecraft “experiments,” let me know. I wonder what makes an Enderman’s eyes glow purple…

Bundles of Bravery

Get ready to muster up your courage and remaster your inventory, because Bundles of Bravery is finally here! Our third game drop brings bundles (an item that lets you store and stack other items) and Hardcore mode (the toughest Survival sub-mode), to Minecraft – and it’s available to play right now.

Watch the launch trailer for Bundles of Bravery!

Declutter your inventory with bundles

Bundles aren’t just a stylish way to give gifts to friends when playing in multiplayer – they’re nifty organization tools that’ll help you manage your ever-expanding inventory. Bundles are an item that can store other items – but unlike chests or barrels, which need to be placed, bundles can be kept in your inventory. In other words, they can travel wherever you do!*

*OK, technically putting a chest on a donkey/llama can also travel with you. But have you ever tried to put a donkey in your inventory? No. That’s just for bundles! (Donkey eggs do not count.)

Bundles can combine stacks of items together – so those three oak wood planks, six different flowers, and four types of stairs can all find a home neatly in your bundle.

The bundles tooltip also makes it easy for you to add, view, and remove items as often as you want. Finally, if you feel like engaging in some bundle-ception (not a word), you can also store bundles within bundles. That is, as long as the bundle you’re storing in another bundle isn’t full! Phew. That was a tongue twister, wasn’t it?

This screenshot shows Alex from Minecraft holding a bundle up

Bundles are an item that lets you store other items, so they’re great for de-cluttering your inventory

This is a screenshot of lots of dyed bundles

You can also dye bundles one of sixteen different colors! Color-coordinate your inventory, or gift a bundle to a friend in their favorite color!

This shows a screenshot of the bundles UI

Plus – adding, viewing, and removing items from your bundle is easy

Hardcore mode – new for bedrock edition.

They didn’t call Hardcore mode “easy-peasy Survival” for one very good reason – it’s the exact opposite of that. In Hardcore mode, the game’s difficulty is locked to the hardest setting, and you only have one life. That means if you die, you can’t respawn – and you’ll only be able to spectate your worlds! So unless pretending to be a ghost in your own Minecraft world, you’ll want to keep an eye on your hunger bar. And watch out for pesky hostile mobs. Oh, and steep cliffs, your bubble-meter, and anything else that might cause you to de-spawn in spectacular fashion. Ehm, good luck with that!

This screenshot shows a first-person in-game shot from Minecraft of a player rowing towards a shore in Hardcore mode

Java players have been dying hopelessly in Hardcore mode for years, and now Bedrock players can experience the terrifying fun for themselves, too!

This is a screenshot of lots of hostile mobs coming towards a player playing in Hardcore mode

In Hardcore mode, the game’s difficulty is locked to the highest setting, and death is permanent

This screenshot shows hostile mobs swarming a player in the trial chambers while they play in Hardcore mode

That means if you DO die in Hardcore mode you'll only be able to spectate your world. So keep an eye on those hearts!

Hardcore mode – now on realms for bedrock and java.

Hardcore mode has existed on Minecraft: Java Edition for a while, but today marks the first day friends can experience the thrill (and the pain!) of this punishing Survival mode together via a realm! That’s right – Hardcore mode is now available on realms in both Bedrock and Java Edition . So if the thought of venturing into the hardest Survival mode of Minecraft by yourself fills you with fear, then grab your realm buddies, and take on the challenge together! Have each other's backs as you work to survive, or play against one another in the most Hardcore PvP challenge you’ve ever attempted. And if you’re not sure how to set up a realm on Java Edition or Bedrock Edition, you can find some help here . Make sure to also check out the Java and Bedrock changelogs.

We’re confident that Hardcore mode will run smoothly for most Bedrock players, but we’re still working on quashing some smaller bugs. Two of these impact multiplayer gameplay – one related to low internet speeds, and another when replacing a Creative mode Realm with a Hardcore mode world. While we develop a fix for these final bugs, we recommend all players regularly back up their worlds and  check our changelog for more detailed information on factors that might trigger them.

In fact, that advice applies to anyone playing on Hardcore mode. Regularly back up your worlds! That’s not just great advice, it’s also a teaser for the very special writers’ challenge coming to Minecraft.net soon. Check back to see if we survived...!

In the meantime – master the chaos with bundles, or embrace it with Hardcore mode. The choice is yours!
