Major Barnett has ordered experiments with batch 10-011 of panimmunity virion, which has been renamed FEV, for Forced Evolutionary Virus . His main concern is with the side effects of the quad-helix structure rather than its main effect of replicative stability. He believes the new structure is the next logical step for mammalian nuclei. Experiments with single-celled organisms is a great success. While their basal metabolism appears unchanged, their immunity to infection and radiation is exceeding all earlier expectations. Addendum: chloroplasts seem unaffected by the virion. Further experiments on plant cells have been canceled by order of Major Barnett.

Log Date May 9, 2075

We infected several species of flatworm with FEV. Within hours the worms had increased in size by 28%, and 39 separate viral contagions were resisted by the population. Each sample was allowed to continue for several generations, and the new DNA structure was successfully passed on to worm's progeny, although only asexual reproduction was noticed in the samples. Experiments with insects have had less success. Major Barnett has postponed these experiments until further notice.

Log Date June 30, 2075

Several lab strains of white mice have been infected successfully with FEV. Again, an increase in size was noted within hours, and after 9 days all mice had stabilized at 31% larger than the control group. Dissection revealed the most increase in size in striated muscle tissue and certain internal organs, such as the liver, heart, and kidneys. In a surprising finding, the infected mice were found to run mazes in less than half of the time of the control group. More testing will be needed to confirm this finding as significant.

Log Date November 9, 2075

We have infected 218 rabbits with FEV. Half of the subjects were implanted with electrodes to monitor EEG activity before and after the infection. Increased electrical activity in the brain was noted in 3.2 seconds (on average) after injection. Again, the typical size increase was noted. However, increased aggression and posturing (especially among males) was noted as well. Sacrifice and profusion yielded brain tissue that showed increased dendritic connection, especially in the limbic system and frontal cortex.

Log Date January 12, 2076

With batch 11-011, we have improved the mitotic cycle efficiency by 43%. We have infected 53 raccoons with the new strain. In addition to the now expected size increase, behavioral tests confirmed an increase in intelligence and manual dexterity by 19 points on the Schuler-Kapp index. Unfortunately, several subjects escaped confinement and had to be hunted down and dispatched. Major Barnett ordered the remaining subjects terminated. Two pairs were unaccounted for.

Log Date May 13, 2076

We have spliced several new gene sequences, supplied by Major Barnett's advisory team, into FEV. With batch 11-101a, we infected 23 dogs of both pure and mixed breed, and all experienced nearly immediate growth. The larger size was accompanied with increased aggressiveness, while no significant intelligence increase was noted. We plan to attempt crossover of 92 allele pairs with batch 11-011. All subjects were terminated after 14 weeks of study.

Log Date October 4, 2076

The crossover has been completed and 15 chimpanzees were infected with batch 11-111. Growth and immunity levels are unprecedented. Attempts to induce cancers in the subjects through radiological and chemical agents were not successful. Increased aggressiveness have led to isolating the subjects. Two subjects suffered violent epileptic seizures and died. All remaining subjects terminated.

Log Date January 7, 2077

Major Barnett has ordered transfer of all FEV research to the Mariposa Military Base . He plans to continue the project experiments on volunteer subjects. I am against this, and would like it noted here that research on human subjects is not recommended by myself or my staff.

The item in-game is simply named "FEV Disk." In the PIP-Boy 2000, its entry is titled "FEV Experiment Tape."

Fallout: London May Have Set the Stage for a 2025 Game to Take Off

Lucky fallout fan spots stunning weapon replicas in a local shop, future fallout games may have a hard time matching one of the series' best villains.

The story of Fallout is filled with the consequences of humanity's actions, adding up to the iconic wastelands players have come to know and love. When it comes to Fallout , the horrors of an unchecked, post-apocalyptic society are highlighted in each entry, showcasing a fascinating glimpse into what a post-nuclear world could look like.

With a growing list of titles, Fallout has robust lore that has made it a standout in the world of RPGs. Following 2018's Fallout 76 , many are wondering what Fallout 5 has in store . From the setting to the storyline, there is essentially nothing substantial known about the next game. With such a long-running series, it can be difficult to keep things fresh while still staying true to a franchise's essence. However, one way Bethesda can mix things up and still embrace the game's lore is by focusing on the FEV. By adding a new strain, Fallout 5 could include a small, but effective, change that offers something fresh for players.

Overlooked and underrated, Fallout: London still seemingly paved the path for an upcoming Fallout-like game with a similar British setting to succeed.

Fallout 5 Taking Note of Fallout 4's Approach to FEV

The source of the super mutants.

FEV, also known as the Forced Evolutionary Virus , is a staple throughout the Fallout franchise. The virus, which was originally used as a biological weapon, has a long history within the series due to its creation of Super Mutants, and Fallout 4 showcased the FEV in a brand-new light. In this chapter's story, The Institute performed years of experiments involving FEV. Through trial and error, Institute scientists unleashed mutated test subjects into the wild, wreaking havoc on the Commonwealth.

The Institute's FEV produced Super Mutants that were hulking, muscular humanoids that boasted immunity to radiation in addition to their strength. Their posture is more upright than other mutant counterparts, and they also have the capacity for basic speech, unlike the poor speech of Vault 87's Super Mutants .

Institute Super Mutants are capable of building forts and setting traps, making them a considerable threat.

Fallout 5 Introducing a New Kind of Super Mutant

Depending on where Fallout 5 takes place , it could leave the door wide open for a new type of Super Mutant. Perhaps another secretive or rogue group like The Institute managed to experiment with an FEV in some way and create a never-before-seen version of Super Mutants. Whether stronger or more intelligent, Super Mutants playing at least a small role in the story would go a long way. Another fascinating angle would be to introduce a colony where Super Mutants and human survivors have managed to coexist peacefully together. There have been civilized and non-hostile Super Mutants in the past, like New Vegas ' Marcus and Fallout 4 's Uncle Leo, but a full-blown cooperative society could be a compelling narrative to explore.

Fallout 5's Mysterious Path Forward

Bethesda's next move.

There are high expectations for Bethesda at the moment. After the lackluster response to Starfield and its recent DLC, Shattered Space , The Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5 have a daunting road ahead. The overwhelmingly positive response to Amazon Prime's Fallout series has reignited interest in the franchise, making the path forward even more challenging for Bethesda. In order to meet expectations, Fallout 5 will have the difficult task of balancing both classic points of lore with fresh concepts.

It is believed that Fallout 5 will release after The Elder Scrolls 6 , which likely means a long wait is ahead for the next chapter.

Although the game will likely need to do more to excite longtime fans, a unique take on Super Mutants could be a strong starting point. With the success of the live-action adaptation and the resurgence of Fallout 76 and its fellow single-player entries, it will be intriguing to see how Bethesda uses these successes to inform Fallout 5 's overall story.

Background [ ]

The FEV lab is an abandoned section of the facility where the Institute tried to unlock the secrets of the Forced Evolutionary Virus , and it is the source of most of the super mutants in the Commonwealth. [1] Although the program failed to produce any results for over a decade, Father insisted on continuing the project until Brian Virgil sabotaged it. [2] The experimental serum that Virgil asks the player character to retrieve to cure his mutation is found here.

The two entrances to the FEV lab, one via a Master-locked terminal and the other via a Novice-locked door, are both in the BioScience division. Entering through the Novice-locked door, a short decontamination corridor leads to a dead synth and a Novice-locked door to a small adjoining security room. The corridor beyond is protected by three laser turrets, and leads through an Advanced-locked door controlled by a Novice-locked terminal into a storage room occupied by an Assaultron .

Beyond the storage room is a corridor guarded by two more laser turrets and featuring another dead synth and three dead house cats . Two small closets and four holding chambers, two Novice-locked and one Advanced-locked, adjoin the corridor; one of the holding chambers contains a dead super mutant and another dead house cat. At the end of the corridor is a foyer guarded by two more laser turrets and a laser tripwire-activated trap. A small closet is to the east, and a Novice-locked terminal allowing further progress is to the west.

The final room is the main research facility, with three cylindrical glass vats where super mutants were held for experimentation; two of the vats still contain specimens, while the third was apparently smashed with a chair. Virgil's experimental serum and three holotapes are found in this room. The holotape Brian Virgil personal log 0176 , which explains why Virgil left the Institute, can be given to Madison Li to convince her to leave the Institute during the quest From Within . A terminal is filled with test subject information and progress reports, and a door to the east leads to the BioScience division's Master-locked entrance.

Notable loot [ ]

  • Hooked pipe wrench mod - In the storage room, on a shelf.
  • Puncturing pipe wrench mod - In the storage room, on a shelf.
  • Experimental serum - In the room with the super mutant vats, on a counter in the southeast corner.
  • Brian Virgil personal log 0176 - Holotape, in the room with the super mutant vats, on the table next to the terminal along the west wall.
  • FEV research notes - Two holotapes, in the room with the super mutant vats, on consoles in front of the vats.
  • BioScience systems access - Holotape, given by Newton Oberly during the quest A House Divided .

  4. Did anyone in the games explain how FEV was created?

The purpose of it was originally to create super soldiers, but flaws in the virus lead it to turn people into super mutants and create various other mutant creatures. As for the Institute, they were able to produce FEV. The super mutants in Fallout 4 were created by a strain of FEV produced by the institute.

It didn't work quite right though, and so they turned it into FEV. In theory the FEV virus could be re-engineered to power up the immune system, destroying the damaged DNA in cancer cells. 18. Why was Father ordering FEV experiments to be carried out?

The Institute was experimenting with FEV to create a replacement for their synths. Obviously this didn't work out, so it was just completely abandoned. I got the impression that he was so intent on FEV research because he was looking for a cure to whatever disease he had. Because FEV itself is a rewritable retrovirus.
