1. bungou stray dogs (bungo stray dogs).
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: April 2016 – June 2016
Atsushi Nakajima has been expelled from his orphanage and is starving. In his unfortunate moment, he sees a man floating down the river, legs up. After jumping in to save the man, Atsushi learns that he has just interrupted the man’s suicide attempt. If that isn’t unusual enough, the man—named Dazai—works with the Armed Detective Agency, using his supernatural abilities to solve crimes too tricky for the police. Atsushi joins the same agency, learns more about his own mysterious past, and works with a group of other gifted individuals.
If you like the light-hearted play between Vanitas and Noé, then you will definitely enjoy Bungou Stray Dogs. Both anime were produced by the same studio and have a similar vibe. Though Vanitas is more visually striking, Bungou Stray Dogs is an enjoyable watch in terms of comedy and having a whole cast of interesting characters. These stories are very different, but it is worth the watch. With several seasons and a movie, there is a lot of love about Bungo Stray Dogs!

2. Enen no Shouboutai (Fire Force)
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: July 2019 – December 2019
Of all the things that can end a person’s life, spontaneous human combustion is the cause of death that everyone fears the most. Uncurable and without a defined cause, this type of death causes the afflicted to become an infernal. They burn to ash and continue to burn those around them. The Special Fire Force arrives to lay an infernal to rest and save the general public in these moments. Shinra Kusakabe joins the Fire Force on a personal journey to become a hero, find his long lost brother, and learn the cause of human combustion.
Fire Force and Vanitas no Carte share an exciting and obscure enemy. In Vanitas, the Charlatans seem not to have a physical body and are an intelligent and evil mass. In Fire Force, the infernals and creatures of Adolla (supposedly heaven) are both entities that will remind you of Vanitas no Carte. The main character takes a similar journey to end the incurable affliction as well, though they go about it much differently. In addition, Vanitas no Carte is a beautifully animated creation, and so too is Fire Force. Check it out!

3. Muhyo to Rouji no Mahouritsu Soudan Jimusho (Muhyo & Roji's Bureau of Supernatural Investigation)
- Aired: August 2018 – October 2018
Muhyo & Roji’s Bureau of Supernatural Investigation is a detective-themed anime featuring Muhyo, a master of magical law, and Roji, who is still learning. If you have an unwanted possession, are being haunted, or have monsters you can’t get rid of, Muhyo and Roji will take the case. Ghosts have their own set of laws that include not harassing humans, and when they are broken, Muhyo compares the act against magical law and passes judgment.
Both anime include people investigating things to do with supernatural beings, though they are specifically different. Muhyo practices magical law and encounters ghosts who break it, while Vanitas is a vampire doctor looking at a more extensive condition. Muhyo is also a cape-wearing, overconfident person who wields a remarkable book to accomplish his tasks. He can be a jerk and doesn’t lose any sleep based on what you think about him. Does this sound familiar? Take a look at Muhyo & Roji’s Bureau of Supernatural Investigation!

4. dantalian no shoka (the mystic archives of dantalian).
- Aired: July 2011 – October 2011
The grandfather of Lord Hugh Anthony Disward, called Huey, has passed away, and Huey is the beneficiary of his will. His grandfather was a known collector of rare and unusual books and though Huey inherits his mansion, he is also instructed to take responsibility for his grandfather’s forbidden archives of ancient knowledge, Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian, and a girl named Dalian. It becomes the journey of Huey and Dalian to solve mysteries caused by Phantom books, which are cursed and have a significant amount of power.
The Mystic Archives of Dantalian is like Vanitas in that it involves a bookkeeper that protects books of mystical power and abilities. Like Noé searches for Vanitas to observe his book, Huey has been instructed to take care of Dalian in his grandfather’s will. Both Noé and Huey find themselves helping their bookkeeping and arrogant partner in crime, who seems to know much more about the situation than they do. For another great adventure involving a mysterious book, check out The Mystic Archives of Dantalian!

5. Lord El-Melloi II Sei no Jikenbo: Rail Zeppelin Grace Note (Lord El Melloi II’s Case Files {Rail Zeppelin} Grace Note)
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: July 2019 – September 2019
It has been a decade since the Holy Grail War, and Waver Velvet, who fought in the war, is now known as Lord El Melloi II. This title is primarily cosmetic and was given to him by the younger sister of the first El Melloi. Waver is acting as a placeholder for the Lord’s title until the young girl is old enough to rule the House of El Melloi. He is an instructor for the Clock Tower and teaches new generations of mages in Modern Magecraft Theory. Lord El Melloi II solves supernatural cases with his grave keeper sidekick, Gray, when he is not teaching.
Both anime deal with a supernatural mystery, though in Rail Zeppelin Grace Note, the danger seeks him out, and in Vanitas, the protagonist does everything he can to look for more patients. This anime lacks the humor of Vanitas, but that contributes to the more mature feel of adult relationships that is also present in Vanitas. If you like the segment in Vanitas where the book opens, you will enjoy the fight scenes of Gray, the assistant of Lord El Melloi. She wields a scythe, and while we won’t spoil the transformation here, do keep an eye out for it.

6. Mars Red
- Aired: April 2021 – June 2021
In Tokyo’s year 1923, there is a massive increase in the number of vampires. They have always been present, but with an influx of a black market artificial blood, people are starting to become vampires against their will, and more people are dying because of that. With their numbers increasing, the government puts together an all-vampire military unit called Code Zero. They hunt other vampires in Japan that indiscriminately hurt humans and dispose of them. Much about this situation has not been figured out yet, and ethics are questioned as emotions run high.
Both anime feature a hated vampire population and a crisis facing how to keep the peace between vampires and humans with unknown forces causing it to spiral out of control. The Charlatans in Vanitas look to increase curse bearers, and Mars Red has more people surviving vampire attacks than should, indicating that someone is helping them. More than that, if you love how beautiful Vanitas is, you will appreciate the old-style cinematography feel of Mars Red. Like Vanitas, Mars Red is more mature with adult relationships and problems.

The Case Study of Vanitas is another shonen anime that has recently made waves, with its first season allowing players to immerse themselves in a brilliant supernatural setting filled to the brim with vampire societies and massive taboos that are expanded upon quite deftly in the series. Fans of dark fantasy will definitely find The Case Study of Vanitas to be pretty impressive and a great starting point for a series that shows a ton of promise.
RELATED: Best Anime Openings Of All Time, Ranked
Given the allure of this anime, it goes without saying that fans would want to check out more shows in the same vein. Thankfully, given how diverse and enjoyable manga really is, viewers will find no shortage of supernatural anime that feels just like The Case Study of Vanitas in some form or other. The following candidates are the cream of the crop in this context.
10 JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
While only a few antagonists are vampires in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure , their impact is felt throughout the series and its arcs. The show pulls no punches when it comes to showing just how brutal and despicable vampires are.
Of course, that's just a small part of what makes JoJo's Bizarre Adventure such a riveting anime. David Production has breathed new life into the works of Hirohiko Araki, turning this anime into a must-watch for fans of any shonen series due to just how iconic it is.
9 Hellsing Ultimate
Speaking of vampires, it would be impossible to not mention the brilliance of Hellsing Ultimate . This anime is a continuation of the brilliant Hellsing adaptation, somehow managing to eclipse its predecessor as well.
Hellsing Ultimate pulls no punches when it comes to the sheer level of brutality and gore present in the series. It might not be an anime that's easy to stomach, but fans who don't mind such excessive violence will find themselves enjoying this show quite a bit.
8 Tokyo Ghoul
The Ghouls present in Tokyo Ghoul can be seen as a modern take on vampires... and much more sinister ones as well. These Ghouls need the blood of humans to survive, and some obtain this in the most savage manner possible.

Unfortunately, the show pretty much veered off a cliff after its brilliant first installment. Too many liberties were taken with the original plot, leading to a show that feels horribly disjointed and a shell of what the manga's scope is.
7 Castlevania
No one expected Castlevania to be anything but a bad adaptation of a beloved video game property. However, in a rare turn of events, this Netflix adaptation is actually quite brilliant and a fitting addition to the esteemed legacy of Castlevania .
Everything from the series' iconic characters to its recognizable setting has made its way into the anime in a definitive fashion. It's a great show that any fan of creepy gothic settings should check out, regardless of whether they're familiar with the popular video game series.
Manhwa adaptations have been all the rage in modern times, which is great since this art form also deserves some recognition of its own. Noblesse is one such popular manhwa that has received an anime adaptation , which has been a pretty mixed bag.
The pacing and character writing of the show might be somewhat poor, but there's just something enchanting about one of the biggest manhwa getting a high-budget adaptation. However, there's a lot of missed potential in Noblesse that isn't going to be ignored either.
5 Death Note
Another supernatural anime that fans of suspenseful and thrilling shows would love is Death Note . This series has been considered by many to be one of the most popular and important anime of all time, serving as a gateway for many fans to get into this entertainment medium.
RELATED: Best Anime Fighting Games Of All Time
Death Note 's intriguing premise, coupled with a string of amazing mysteries, makes for a great time as people binge through this amazing series. The dynamic between Light and L is easily the best part of the series and something that viewers will sorely miss after they're done with this amazing show.
4 Demon Slayer
Another wildly popular anime that deals with supernatural themes is Demon Slayer . It's another dark fantasy anime with steampunk influences that fans of The Case Study of Vanitas will find to be right up their alley.
Chances are that most people have already seen Demon Slayer due to how popular it is. It's a pretty gory anime that deals with some mature themes, but the striking art style and a simple yet interesting premise turn the show into something truly magical.
3 Jujutsu Kaisen
Another supernatural anime that applies this setting in a modern context is Jujutsu Kaisen . The anime came out of nowhere and established itself as one of the most popular shows around, with fans eagerly waiting for its prequel movie to come out sooner rather than later on Western shores.

Yuji Itadori seems like a pretty by-the-numbers protagonist but actually has a lot going for him. This, coupled with the anime's amazing battles and memorable characters, makes for a great time indeed.
Bleach is a legendary anime that leans heavily on supernatural and spiritual elements. The series might've tanked after a strong start, but there's no denying the fact that Bleach has some must-watch moments of its own...even during the Thousand-Year Blood War arc that is going to receive a long-overdue adaptation!
The story of the Shinigami as they try to fulfill their duties and save their realm from annihilation is a brilliant tale that is great to witness, regardless of the many speedbumps along the way. Fans who manage to look past Bleach 's many shortcomings will enjoy a pretty great-looking anime with amazing powers and impressive battles.
1 Devilman Crybaby
Out of all the anime on this list, Devilman Crybaby is easily the darkest and most mature of the lot . The show doesn't mess around with showing the devilish nature of humans and how vile they can really be.
It's a hard watch, but the themes of Devilman Crybaby are solid enough to carry the experience even for particularly squeamish people. It's a short and fun watch that fans of The Case Study of Vanitas should check out!

The Case Study of Vanitas Manga Online
The case study of vanitas.
There once lived a vampire known as Vanitas, hated by his own kind for being born under a full blue moon, as most arise on the night of a crimson one. Afraid and alone, he created the “Book of Vanitas,” a cursed grimoire that would one day take his vengeance on all vampires; this is how the story goes, at least.
Vanitas no Karte follows Noé Archiviste, a young man who is traveling aboard an airship in 19th century Paris with one goal in mind: to find the Book of Vanitas. A sudden vampire attack leads him to meet the enigmatic Vanitas, a doctor who specializes in vampires and, much to Noé’s surprise, an entirely ordinary human. The mysterious doctor has inherited both the name and the infamous text from the Vanitas of legend, using the grimoire to heal his patients. But behind his kind demeanor lies something a bit more sinister…

With its wintry atmosphere and likable cast, The Case Study of Vanitas is a fun vampire show. If you're missing it, we've compiled a list of anime like The Case Study of Vanitas to keep you company.
RELATED: Is The Case Study of Vanitas a BL Anime?
Pandora Hearts
While not exactly similar in terms of plot, Pandora Hearts could not be missing from this list.
A loose Alice in Wonderland adaptation, this anime is based on the manga Jun Mochizuki created before Vanitas , and the aesthetics speak for themselves.
If you’re a fan of one, the other’s aesthetics might seem familiar to you.
Pandora Hearts is a supernatural anime about a boy who tries to make sense of the strange things that have befallen him and understand the meaning of his existence.
Some character tropes and situations encountered in it have their counterparts in Vanitas , while both shows take plays in a stylized 19th-century Europe.
Moriarty the Patriot
Moriarty the Patriot follows Sherlock Holmes’ archnemesis as an origin story of sorts.
The classic literature inspirations make it quite different from Vanitas , a clear fantasy title. Still, fans of one are very likely to enjoy the other due to the similar aesthetics.
Both anime feature elegantly drawn male protagonists, dark plots, and mysteries the main characters are called to solve, making for quite similar viewing experiences.
If you like period pieces about vampires but Vanitas was a little too fluffy and colorful, MARS RED might be for you.
Based on a play, the fantasy show follows an army of vampires who hunt their kind in the early 1920s, a time of rapid change for Japan.
Like The Case Study of Vanitas , MARS RED focuses on a division between bloodthirsty vampires, and those who cling to a humane, civilized nature, and the tragedy that occurs when the two collide.
Vampire Knight
Vampire Knight is more of a shojo anime , and one that hasn’t aged particularly well after the Twilight craze died out. However, there are still fun elements about it, especially if you enjoy school settings.
As is the case with Vanitas , Vampire Knight mostly features vampires who lead normal, almost human-like lives, and those who stray away from this ideal and become bloodthirsty move the plot in devastating ways.
Plus, the art is extremely pretty, especially for its time.
Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut
If you like vampires in historical or pseudo-historical settings that have rarely been associated with the creatures of the night, this one might be for you.
Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut takes the Cold War into an imaginary world, but the conflict is much the same.
As the competition for space becomes fierce, Irina, a young vampire girl, will do anything to be the first person on the moon.
While the similarities with The Case Study of Vanitas aren’t very prominent, both focus on vampires, who are quite similar to regular humans, have a special relationship with the moon, and work to achieve their aspirations.
Hellsing Ultimate
For many fans, Hellsing is the ultimate vampire anime (pun intended!).
The Case Study of Vanitas is a bit more optimistic, with the two main characters reintegrating lost causes of vampires into society.
Hellsing features vampire hunter Integra Hellsing who fights the creatures of the night with an unlikely weapon; Alucard, a vampire who will fight his kind and fight against everyone who would harm Hellsing.
Similarities can be found in the fact that both anime have vampires in a classic 19th-century setting.
Moreover, the main characters’ dynamics are comparable, and both shows feature a combination of funny and violent moments.
Bungou Stray Dogs
Bungou Stray Dogs doesn’t feature vampires, but it’s a fellow Bones anime, and its structure is quite similar to that of The Case Study of Vanitas.
The show features a detective agency consisting of characters who are based on classic Japanese authors, making a treat for literature fans.
Like Vanitas , Bungou Stray Dogs is founded on mystery that operates on two levels; mysteries associated with the main plot that the characters must solve in the narrative present, and the mysteries of their past, revealed to us slowly.
Moreover, Bungou Stray Dogs features attractively drawn male main characters and the fun banter between them as they work towards a common goal.
Black Butler
Black Butler might not focus on vampires, but it’s one of the few shows that can match the gorgeous, comfortably familiar aesthetics found in The Case Study of Vanitas.
Both shows unfold during the 19th century and boast incomparable art.
Moreover, both Black Butler and The Case Study of Vanitas ' mysteries of the supernatural kind are integral to the plot, and the morally grey main characters are called to resolve them.
Dantalian no Shoka
Dantalian no Shoka follows Huey Disward, a young lord trying to uncover the mystery surrounding his grandfather’s death.
Charged with the care of Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian, a forbidden library, and of a young girl named Dalian – who turned out to be the same – Huey must solve many mysteries in a Victorian-coded setting.
Both Dantalian no Shoka and The Case Study of Vanitas feature iconic anime duos in possession of dangerous books.
Moreover, the aesthetics, music, and overall atmosphere are quite similar, meaning that fans of one might want to check out the other.
If you’re looking for something a bit more classic, D. Gray-man is an iconic, high-stake shonen anime about a boy trying to become an exorcist, to stop a sinister Earl from entrapping souls.
Allen can see the souls’ anguish due to his cursed eye, an ability that might remind you of Noe’s ability to see other characters’ memories by drinking their blood.
Both anime are stylish and have quite similar atmospheres, although D. Gray-man is a little more focused on action.
If you love Vanitas but feel more work should have been put into some of the battles, you might have found your next watch.
Sirius the Jaeger
If you’d like to move away from the 19th-century aesthetics to a more modern vampire anime – but still quite vintage as far as the setting is concerned, you’re in luck.
Sirius the Jaeger unfolds in a hypothetical 1930s Tokyo, one that’s been infiltrated by vampires.
The main character Yuliy is a vampire hunter who is trying to locate an artefact and protect it before vampires use it for their destructive goals.
Although this premise is a bit different from Vanitas , the two shows share quite similar vibes and focus on the origins of vampires.
Blood Blockade Battlefront
Did you love The Case Study of Vanitas but crave something a bit more futuristic? You might want to try Blood Blockade Battlefront , which also features vampires, along with talking fishmen and other creatures.
Like Vanitas , Blood Blockade Battlefront features a main character who might remind you of Noe.
Like him, Leonardo from Blood Blockade Battlefront is drawn into a dangerous world – namely Hellsalem's Lot, formerly known as New York City.
Accompanied by quirky allies, he must navigate a place unlike any he has ever known and solve all sorts of mysteries.
Both Blood Blockade Battlefront and The Case Study of Vanitas are Bones anime and have similar humor, so if you enjoyed one, the other might be for you also.
Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign
Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign is a post-apocalyptic vampire work that might nevertheless remind you of Vanitas .
In a world where vampires have taken over and killed every adult and older teen while allowing those aged 13 or under to live in exchange for their blood, a found family of orphans plots their revenge.
One of the main characters is particularly keen on exterminating vampires due to his tragedy, which might remind you of the paladins in Vanitas.
Moreover, Seraph also features characters with interesting chemistry, and the overall vibes are often quite similar.
Blood Lad unfolds in a modern setting, quite different from that of The Case Study of Vanitas. But if you enjoy works with non-violent vampires and humor, you might still want to give Blood Lad a chance after Vanitas.
The main character Staz Charlie Blood is a powerful vampire who has no interest in drinking human blood – he would much rather read manga.
There’s no exact equivalent in Vanitas , but the overly enthusiastic, fun-loving Noe isn’t your typical vampire either.
Blood Lad also focuses on an unlikely bunch of characters who team up for a common goal, and the show often alternates between light-hearted and more serious moments.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
One of the least similar anime on the list, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is nevertheless a good show for fans of Vanitas to watch if they haven’t already.
Produced by Bones (like The Case Study of Vanitas ), it’s one of the best shonen anime for beginners.
FMAB is a bit grittier compared to the stylized Vanitas , but if you love one, you are likely to like the other too.
Both are shonen works with interesting fighting sequences and humorous but also tragic moments. Themes such as the misuse of one’s power are also explored in both works.
Mononoke is the ultimate avant-garde anime to try out. It follows a mysterious man known as Medicine Seller who travels the world seeking monsters known as mononoke.
To exorcize them, the Medicine Seller must interview them to find their shape, truth, and reasoning.
This might remind you of Vanitas ' process of rehabilitating vampires by discovering their true name.
Undead Girl Murder Farce
Undead Girl Murder Farce was a pleasant gothic surprise that fans of The Case Study of Vanitas will appreciate.
The anime follows Tsugaru , a man known as the Cage User, who carries the severed, still-living head of Aya, an undead detective.
Tsugaru and Aya travel the world to solve mysteries, including one about the death of a vampire while trying to locate Aya's body and punish the person who beheaded her.
The Witch and the Beast
The Witch and the Beast is another, newer, ultra-gothic anime, so if this is what you were watching Vanitas for, you're in luck.
In The Witch and the Beast , Guideau and Ashaf are a beast and sorcerer duo.
As they travel the world investigating and solving issues caused by witches, they hope to locate the one who cursed Guideau.
Compared to Vanitas , The Witch and the Beast takes a less optimistic view of supernatural beings, but fans of gothic aesthetics might enjoy it regardless.
Shadows House
Shadows House ' s Victorian gothic mansion is a creepy place and its aesthetically pleasing animation might remind you of Vanitas.
The story of Emilico, a "living doll" and her Shadow lady, Kate, isn't all that similar to that of Vanitas and Noe.
That being said, Shadows House and The Case Study of Vanitas still feature similar sensibilities, including themes such as identity loss, brainwashing, and the need to find autonomy and freedom, both physically and mentally.
The Ancient Magus' Bride
The Ancient Magus' Bride is concerned with all the magical creatures one might encounter in British folklore, but it doesn't focus on vampires.
Yet, the story of Chise Hatori shows us that the fantastic can be fun and whimsical.
In that, it isn't dissimilar to The Case Study of Vanitas. Both are beautiful, colorful anime that grapple with hard themes, such as the loss of one's will to keep going.
At the same time, both series maintain a hopeful attitude, featuring cross-species friendships and characters who are willing to fight for one another.
