This creates an open field where many writers offer their services to eager students to get their assignments done. With many providers of writing services, there is a variation in the prices charged to write an essay. So, what is the correct amount to pay?

The average amount to pay someone to write your essay is between $12 and $35 per page, depending on the paper’s urgency and the assignment’s technicality. Most writers charge up to $12 for simple essays that have a longer deadline while charging up to $35 for technical orders whose deadline is urgent and within a few hours.

how much should you pay someone to write an essay

The cost really depends on several factors that we will discuss in detail later in this article. Before that, I must note that you need to be careful when you are charged anything lower than this. This is because no quality writer will charge anything less than $12.

At the same time, no legit essay writing service will charge way more than $35 because it is way too high. A price of $35 is higher than the target market can afford. The market in this case is students.

The cool thing about the price for cheap college essay services because the writers are open to edits and unlimited revisions. If the clients need several changes in the documents, they are flexible to make edits to the customer’s satisfaction. Let’s dig in.

Why People Opt to Pay Essay Writers

cost of education

Offering an essay writing service to your client comes at a cost. You are at liberty to charge an essay based on several factors.

That said, you should have the advanced skill to handle any order that comes your way so that you do not produce shoddy work.

Many people opt for professional essay writing services because they want to enjoy premium quality. The essays from such professionals are of outstanding quality.

Additionally, most of such articles are 100% original and unique. Be sure that you will not be duplicating someone’s work.

Besides, by hiring someone to write you an essay, the chances of getting your work on time are high.

Some can write top-notch content within hours or days and get the feedback to you on time. Still, these essays are usually free of grammatical and spelling errors.

Factors that determine the Cost of an Essay or Paper

Pricing your essay paper depends upon several factors. You must consider such elements while negotiating with your potential client to strike a balance. Generally, the standard way of pricing for any paper is by involving the following components:

1. The Urgency of the Paper – Deadline

Not all essay papers ought to get delivered in the same timeframe. Some can take months, weeks, days, and others may require hours.

For instance, if the paper is exceptionally urgent to a tune of six hours, you must be ready to pay for more.

That is because the essay writer needs to suspend other duties and focus on that paper within the time limit. Essay writing is a complex work when subjected to a short time frame.

urgent essay costs

The main disadvantage of short time frames is that mistakes and errors may occur. If the writer is conversant in the field, be sure to make minimal mistakes.

Many writers charge expensively when you give them such orders with strict deadlines that require just some hours.

On the other side, you can opt to charge averagely if the deadline is for a few weeks. That is because you are not under pressure to deliver that work. You have ample time to research and give to the expectation of your client.

Lastly, if the deadline is for a month or so, you have an option to charge less than shorter deadlines.

The essay writer can write the paper and have adequate time to revise and correct any visible error without feeling the pressure.

The trick that comes with such orders is that you should also write them in advance and take more time to revise and make any meaningful amendments as per the client’s wishes.

2. Your Level of Study for the homework

The level of study is a vital aspect that one should price any order. There are different levels of analysis to factor in your services.

First off, we have college-level diplomas and undergraduate degrees. Given such tasks to write a specific essay on their level, we expect that you charge lower.

essay costs change with Study level

On the other hand, you should charge higher when you are handling master’s level projects.

That is because they are so involving and require extensive research.

For that matter, such projects are time-consuming and tedious.

Charge the essay according to the level to appear professional.

Last but not least, a PhD essay will command high rates from the writer. That is because you must perform comprehensive research and come up with practical and helpful information to prove your facts.

Just like a master’s level, it also requires more time for the writer to research and gets the right points about a specific topic in focus.

3. The Technicality of the assignment

Some essays are easy to write without demanding much effort from the researcher. As such, the student expects the writer to charge lower because one will not scratch the head looking for more materials to make them appear complicated.

Also, some of the topics that you may be researching are available readily on different platforms.

Surprisingly, some essays are difficult to develop and construct into valuable and meaningful forms. You need to perform complex and extensive research and come up with an accurate conclusion that is devoid of errors.

Some may include performing some mathematical calculations and developing intricate formulae before resolving to a certain point.

Given a task that is not too technical, you should charge less. If you are handling a technical paper, charge more since you will require more effort to make it acceptable in the end.

4. Editing vs. Writing Task

Some assignments from students may come in two formats. Firstly, it may just be to edit existing work and do some meaningful changes to make it acceptable.

Editing requires less research as the writer may be eliminating some grammatical and spelling errors and other mistakes.

Additionally, editing may be to change facts and tailor them to agree with the demands of the topic in question. Overall, you will charge less when editing since little effort is what you require to make matters done.

Interestingly, writing from scratch can be time-consuming. You have to perform thorough research before you align those facts into a usable form.

Unlike editing, writing will consume more time since you have to write each and every part of the context. For that matter, you have to charge higher since it is time-consuming and involving.

5. The Spacing of the Paper

Spacing is another fact that one should never overlook when dealing with essay writing tasks.

Each client may come with varying instructions regarding spacing. You should see if the customer prefers single spacing or double spacing.

If you are using the single-spacing format, you should double charge the essay. The main argument behind such a rule is that a single-spaced page is the same as two double-spaced pages. Ensure that you stick to this rule and make a kill.

how much do you charge to write an essay

Have you ever wondered how much you have to pay to get an essay done? Or maybe you’re currently in the buying mode and in need of urgent essay-writing help but you first want to know how much it’s going to cost you?

It costs $10 to $30 per page to have a comprehensive essay written for you. The range in cost depends on a number of factors, including the writing agency, the level of education, the length of the essay, and the deadline.

Whether you’re on a tight budget or you just need to get an essay written fast, you will find an online writing service that can help you with professional assignment help .

Key Takeaways

  • Essays with shorter deadlines cost more than those that have longer periods prior to submission.
  • Our essay writing service charges $12 per page, making Help for Assessment the most affordable platform to get your essay done.
  • Level of education and paper formatting also affect how much academic writing services charge to write an essay. A single-spaced essay costs twice what you’d pay for a double-spaced essay on the same topic.

To be abundantly clear, our charges per page for an essay remain constant regardless of the complexity of the topic.

How Much Does It Cost to Write an Essay?

Help for Assessment is one of the most affordable and reliable essay helpers on the web. We’ve worked with hundreds of students, written more than a thousand essays, and had a 98% success rate.

Our goal as a custom writing service is simple. We are actively involved in helping individuals like you to complete challenging essay assignments, particularly those that have shorter deadlines.

For just $12.99 per page, you can get an essay written, proofread for conciseness and clarity, edited, and delivered on time.

We calculate our pricing based on several factors, and they’re as follow:

Type of Essay

We treat all essays the same in terms of pricing because they belong to the same assignment category.

That means if you’re paying $12.99 per page for an argumentative essay, the cost will be the same for an expository, persuasive, MBA, marketing plan, and all other types of essays .

The Urgency of the Assignment

How fast you need the assignment delivered to you also determines how much you’ll pay to have the essay written.

If you’re already running out of time for your essay and need it written in 24 hours, expect to pay around $21.99 per page.

On the other hand, if you place an order with a 7-day deadline, you’ll pay $14.99 per page, which is a difference of $7. The longer the deadline the less you pay for the essay.

Length of the Essay

Our standard rate for writing an essay is $12.99 per page. The subtotal that you pay builds on this pricing structure.

In other words, the total amount you’ll pay to get the essay completed is the cost per page multiplied by the number of pages you want written.

Education Level

If you think about it, learning gets more complex and involving as you advance in your level of education. The research process becomes intense and writing requires more time put relevant details together.

Given the variation in the depth and breadth of research, not to mention the intensity of the writing process, an essay written for High School level is relatively cheaper than an essay written for Masters.

Unpacking the Cost of Words: How Much Should an Essay Really Set You Back?

An image for an article focused on the topic: how much is an essay

In the digital age, the demand for written content has skyrocketed. From academic essays to blog posts, the need for quality writing is more significant than ever. But as students, professionals, and businesses seek out writing services, a pressing question arises: how much should an essay really cost? In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the various factors that influence the cost of essays, the different types of writing services available, and how to determine what you should be paying for quality written content.

The Landscape of Writing Services

Before diving into the costs associated with essay writing, it’s essential to understand the landscape of writing services. The market is diverse, with various players offering a range of services tailored to meet different needs and preferences. Here are the primary categories:

  • Freelance Writers: Independent writers who offer their services on platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, or through personal websites. Their rates can vary widely based on experience, expertise, and the complexity of the project. Freelancers often have the flexibility to set their own prices and choose the projects they want to work on, which can lead to a highly personalized service. However, this variability can also mean that clients may encounter a wide range of quality, from novice writers to seasoned professionals. Freelancers may also specialize in specific niches, such as technical writing, creative writing, or academic writing, allowing clients to find someone who is particularly well-suited to their needs.
  • Writing Agencies: Companies that employ multiple writers and editors to provide a range of writing services. These agencies often have set pricing structures and can offer more reliability and quality assurance compared to individual freelancers. They typically have a team of professionals who can handle various types of writing projects, ensuring that clients receive high-quality work that meets their specific requirements. Writing agencies may also offer additional services such as project management, which can be beneficial for larger projects that require coordination among multiple writers. Furthermore, many agencies have established reputations and client testimonials, which can provide potential customers with a sense of security when choosing a service.
  • Academic Writing Services: Specialized agencies that focus on academic essays, research papers, and dissertations. They typically cater to students and may offer a range of services from writing to editing and proofreading. These services are designed to help students navigate the often challenging landscape of academic writing, providing them with expert assistance to improve their grades and understanding of the subject matter. Academic writing services often employ writers with advanced degrees and expertise in specific fields, ensuring that the content produced is not only well-written but also academically sound. Additionally, many of these services offer guarantees regarding originality and plagiarism-free work, which is crucial for maintaining academic integrity.
  • Content Mills: Websites that connect clients with writers for low-cost content. While they can be budget-friendly, the quality of writing can vary significantly. Content mills often operate on a high-volume, low-cost model, which can lead to a race to the bottom in terms of pricing. Writers on these platforms may be paid per word or per article, which can incentivize them to produce content quickly rather than focusing on quality. As a result, clients may find that while they can obtain content at a lower price, the writing may lack depth, originality, or a professional touch. It's essential for clients to carefully review samples and ratings before selecting a writer from a content mill to ensure they receive work that meets their standards.

Understanding the Differences

Each of these categories serves different segments of the market and caters to varying client needs. Freelance writers might be ideal for those looking for personalized service and flexibility, while writing agencies can provide a more structured approach with a team of professionals. Academic writing services are particularly beneficial for students who require specialized knowledge and adherence to academic standards. On the other hand, content mills may appeal to businesses or individuals looking for quick, inexpensive content, albeit with the understanding that quality may be compromised.

Market Trends and Considerations

The landscape of writing services is continually evolving, influenced by factors such as technological advancements, changing client needs, and the growing demand for content across various platforms. As more businesses recognize the importance of high-quality content for their online presence, the demand for skilled writers has surged. This trend has led to increased competition among writing services, prompting many to differentiate themselves through unique offerings, such as specialized niches, faster turnaround times, or enhanced customer service.

Moreover, the rise of artificial intelligence and automated writing tools has begun to impact the industry, with some services incorporating AI to assist in content creation. While these tools can enhance efficiency and reduce costs, they also raise questions about the authenticity and originality of the content produced. As a result, clients must remain vigilant in assessing the quality of work, regardless of the source.

In summary, understanding the landscape of writing services is crucial for anyone looking to engage a writer or writing service. By recognizing the differences between freelancers, agencies, academic services, and content mills, clients can make informed decisions that align with their specific needs and budget. As the market continues to evolve, staying abreast of trends and developments will further empower clients to navigate this diverse and dynamic industry effectively.

Factors Influencing the Cost of Essays

The cost of an essay can fluctuate based on several factors. Understanding these can help you gauge what you should expect to pay:

1. Type of Essay

The type of essay you need plays a significant role in determining the cost. Different academic levels and essay types require varying degrees of research, writing skill, and subject matter expertise. For example:

  • High School Essays: Generally less complex and therefore less expensive, ranging from $10 to $50. These essays often focus on basic themes and require less extensive research, making them more accessible for writers who may not have advanced degrees.
  • College Essays: More in-depth research and analysis are required, typically costing between $50 and $150. College essays often demand a greater understanding of the subject matter, including the ability to synthesize information from multiple sources and present coherent arguments.
  • Graduate-Level Essays: These essays demand a higher level of expertise and can range from $150 to $300 or more. Graduate-level work often involves original research, critical analysis, and a deep understanding of complex theories, which necessitates hiring writers with advanced degrees and specialized knowledge.
  • Specialized Essays: Topics requiring niche knowledge (e.g., law, medicine) may cost significantly more due to the expertise needed. Writers who specialize in these fields often command higher fees because they bring unique insights and a depth of understanding that generalist writers may lack.

2. Length of the Essay

As with most writing projects, the length of the essay directly impacts the cost. Writers often charge per word, per page, or per project, and longer essays typically require more time and effort to complete. Here’s a rough breakdown:

  • Short Essays (500 words): $25 to $100. These essays are often straightforward and may cover simple topics, making them quicker to write.
  • Medium Essays (1000 words): $50 to $200. Medium-length essays require more detailed exploration of topics and may involve more extensive research and analysis.
  • Long Essays (2000 words): $100 to $400. Long essays necessitate comprehensive research, detailed argumentation, and often multiple drafts, which can significantly increase the cost.

3. Deadline

Urgency can significantly affect pricing. If you need an essay completed quickly, expect to pay a premium. Writers often prioritize urgent requests, which can lead to increased costs. Here’s how deadlines can influence costs:

  • Standard Deadline (1 week): Regular pricing applies. This timeframe allows writers to allocate their time effectively and produce quality work without the pressure of a tight deadline.
  • Rush Orders (24-48 hours): Prices can increase by 50% or more. When deadlines are tight, writers may need to rearrange their schedules, work overtime, or prioritize your project over others, justifying the higher fees.

4. Writer’s Expertise

The experience and qualifications of the writer also play a crucial role in pricing. Established writers with a proven track record may charge more for their services, reflecting their expertise and reliability. Here’s a general guideline:

  • Entry-Level Writers: $10 to $30 per hour. These writers may be newer to the field and may lack extensive experience, but they can still produce competent work for less complex topics.
  • Intermediate Writers: $30 to $75 per hour. Intermediate writers typically have a few years of experience and a solid understanding of academic writing conventions, allowing them to tackle more challenging assignments.
  • Expert Writers: $75 to $150+ per hour. Expert writers often hold advanced degrees and have significant experience in their fields, enabling them to produce high-quality, nuanced essays that require deep subject matter expertise.

5. Additional Services

Many writing services offer additional features that can affect the overall cost. These services can enhance the quality of the final product or provide peace of mind for the client. Here’s a breakdown of common additional services:

  • Editing and Proofreading: Often charged separately, these services can add $20 to $100 to your total. Professional editing ensures that the essay is polished, free of grammatical errors, and adheres to the required formatting style.
  • Plagiarism Reports: Some services provide plagiarism checks for an additional fee, typically around $10 to $30. This service is crucial for academic integrity, ensuring that the work is original and properly cited.
  • Revisions: While some services include a certain number of revisions, others may charge extra for additional changes. Understanding the revision policy is essential, as it can impact the overall cost if significant changes are needed after the initial draft.

Comparing Costs: What Should You Expect to Pay?

Now that we’ve unpacked the factors influencing essay costs, let’s look at some average pricing models across different types of writing services. Understanding these costs can help you make informed decisions when seeking writing assistance, ensuring that you receive quality work that meets your needs without breaking the bank.

Freelance Writers

Freelance writers can offer competitive rates, but the quality can vary significantly based on their experience, expertise, and the complexity of the assignment. Here’s a general pricing structure that reflects the diversity in freelance writing:

  • Entry-Level Freelancers: $10 to $30 per page. These writers are often new to the field and may lack extensive experience or a portfolio. While they can produce satisfactory work, it’s essential to review samples and provide clear instructions to ensure your expectations are met.
  • Experienced Freelancers: $30 to $75 per page. Writers in this category typically have a few years of experience and a solid portfolio showcasing their skills. They are more likely to understand the nuances of different writing styles and can tailor their work to meet specific requirements, making them a reliable choice for various projects.
  • Specialized Freelancers: $75 to $150 per page. These writers possess specialized knowledge in particular fields, such as technical writing, legal writing, or academic writing. Their expertise allows them to tackle complex topics with ease, and their higher rates reflect the value they bring to the table. If your project requires in-depth research or a deep understanding of a specific subject, investing in a specialized freelancer can yield excellent results.

Writing Agencies

Writing agencies often have set pricing based on the type of essay and the writer’s expertise. They typically employ a team of writers with varying levels of experience, allowing them to cater to a wide range of client needs. Here’s a breakdown of their pricing structure:

  • Basic Essays: $50 to $100. These essays are usually straightforward and cover general topics. They are suitable for high school assignments or introductory college courses where the complexity is relatively low.
  • Advanced Essays: $100 to $250. These essays require more in-depth research and a higher level of writing skill. They are often assigned in upper-level college courses or specialized subjects where a nuanced understanding is necessary.
  • Premium Services: $250 to $500+. Premium services may include custom research papers, dissertations, or other high-stakes writing projects. Agencies offering these services typically employ top-tier writers with advanced degrees and extensive experience, ensuring that the final product meets rigorous academic standards.

Academic Writing Services

Academic writing services tend to be on the higher end due to the specialized nature of the work involved. These services are designed to assist students at various educational levels, and the pricing reflects the complexity and depth of the assignments:

  • High School Level: $20 to $80. At this level, essays may focus on basic topics and require less research. The lower end of this range is often suitable for simpler assignments, while the higher end may involve more detailed analysis or creative writing tasks.
  • College Level: $80 to $200. College essays often demand critical thinking, thorough research, and a clear understanding of academic writing conventions. The pricing reflects the need for more sophisticated arguments and a higher level of writing skill.
  • Graduate Level: $200 to $500+. Graduate-level writing services cater to students pursuing advanced degrees, where the expectations for quality and depth of research are significantly higher. These essays may involve original research, comprehensive literature reviews, and adherence to specific formatting guidelines, justifying the premium pricing.

Additional Considerations

When comparing costs, it’s essential to consider additional factors that may influence the final price. These can include:

  • Turnaround Time: Urgent requests often come with higher fees. If you need an essay completed within a short timeframe, be prepared to pay a premium for expedited service.
  • Revisions and Edits: Some services include free revisions, while others may charge extra for changes. Clarifying this upfront can help avoid unexpected costs later.
  • Plagiarism Checks: Quality writing services often provide plagiarism reports to ensure originality. This may be included in the price or offered as an additional service.
  • Customer Support: Agencies with robust customer support may charge higher fees, but they can provide peace of mind and assistance throughout the writing process.

In conclusion, understanding the various pricing models and factors influencing essay costs can empower you to make informed decisions when seeking writing services. Whether you choose a freelance writer, a writing agency, or an academic writing service, being aware of what to expect in terms of pricing will help you find the right fit for your needs and budget.

How to Choose the Right Service for Your Needs

With so many options available, choosing the right writing service can be daunting. The sheer volume of choices can lead to confusion and uncertainty, especially if you are not familiar with the industry. Here are some tips to help you make an informed decision:

1. Assess Your Needs

Before you start looking for a writing service, it is crucial to clearly define your needs. Consider the type of essay you require, whether it is an argumentative essay, a research paper, a narrative essay, or a descriptive piece. Each type of writing has its own unique requirements and styles. Additionally, think about the required length of the essay; this can range from a short 500-word piece to a lengthy 5,000-word dissertation. Furthermore, take into account your deadline. Are you looking for a service that can deliver within 24 hours, or do you have a more extended timeline? Lastly, your budget is a significant factor. Determine how much you are willing to spend on this service, as prices can vary widely depending on the complexity and urgency of your request. By clearly outlining these parameters, you will be able to narrow down your options significantly and find a service that aligns with your specific requirements.

2. Research and Compare

Take the time to conduct thorough research on different writing services available in the market. Start by looking for reviews and testimonials from previous clients. Websites like Trustpilot, SiteJabber, and even social media platforms can provide valuable insights into the experiences of others. Pay attention to both positive and negative feedback, as this will give you a balanced view of the service's strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, look for samples of their work, which are often available on their websites. Comparing multiple services will give you a better understanding of what to expect in terms of quality and pricing. Make a list of potential services and create a comparison chart that includes factors such as pricing, turnaround time, writer qualifications, and customer support. This organized approach will help you make a more informed decision.

3. Check Credentials

For academic writing, it is essential to ensure that the writers have the necessary qualifications and expertise in your subject area. Many reputable services will provide information about their writers’ backgrounds, including their educational qualifications, areas of specialization, and professional experience. Look for services that employ writers with advanced degrees, such as Master's or Ph.D. holders, particularly if you need help with complex topics. Additionally, inquire about the service’s hiring process. A rigorous selection process that includes writing tests and interviews can be an indicator of a high-quality service. This step is crucial, as the expertise of the writer can significantly impact the quality of the final product.

4. Ask for Samples

Don’t hesitate to ask for writing samples from the service you are considering. This will give you a sense of the writer’s style, tone, and overall quality of work. Look for samples that are similar to the type of essay you need, as this will provide a more accurate representation of what you can expect. If a service is unwilling to provide samples, it may be a red flag, indicating a lack of confidence in their writers or a potential lack of quality. Additionally, consider the formatting and adherence to academic standards in the samples provided. A well-structured and properly formatted sample can indicate that the service pays attention to detail and understands the requirements of academic writing.

5. Understand the Terms

Before committing to a service, it is imperative to carefully read their terms and conditions. Pay close attention to their revision policy, as this will determine how many revisions you are entitled to if the final product does not meet your expectations. A good writing service should offer free revisions within a specified timeframe. Additionally, familiarize yourself with their refund policy. Understand under what circumstances you can request a refund and the process involved. Be aware of any additional fees that may apply, such as charges for expedited delivery or specific formatting requests. Transparency in these terms is a sign of a reputable service, and understanding them will help you avoid any unpleasant surprises later on.

Conclusion: Finding Value in Your Investment

In conclusion, the cost of an essay can vary widely based on several factors, including the type of essay, length, deadline, writer’s expertise, and additional services. While it’s essential to stay within your budget, it’s equally important to prioritize quality. Investing in a well-written essay can pay off in terms of grades, professional reputation, and overall satisfaction. A high-quality essay not only reflects your understanding of the subject matter but also enhances your credibility as a student or professional.

Understanding the Factors Influencing Essay Costs

When considering the cost of an essay, it is crucial to understand the various factors that contribute to pricing. The type of essay plays a significant role; for instance, a simple narrative essay may cost less than a complex research paper that requires extensive analysis and sourcing. Additionally, the length of the essay is a critical determinant; longer essays typically require more time and effort from the writer, which can increase the overall cost.

Another significant factor is the deadline. Urgent requests for essays that need to be completed within a short timeframe often incur higher fees due to the expedited nature of the work. Writers may charge a premium for their availability and the ability to deliver quality work under pressure. Furthermore, the expertise of the writer is paramount; seasoned professionals with advanced degrees or specialized knowledge in a particular field may command higher rates compared to less experienced writers.

Prioritizing Quality Over Cost

While it may be tempting to opt for the cheapest option available, it is essential to prioritize quality when selecting a writing service. A well-crafted essay can significantly impact your academic performance and professional image. High-quality writing not only demonstrates a thorough understanding of the topic but also showcases your ability to communicate effectively. This is particularly important in academic settings, where grades can influence future opportunities, such as scholarships, internships, and job placements.

Moreover, investing in a quality essay can lead to long-term benefits. For students, a strong academic record can open doors to advanced studies or desirable job positions. For professionals, well-written content can enhance brand reputation, attract clients, and establish authority in a particular field. Therefore, considering the potential return on investment is crucial when evaluating the cost of writing services.

Making Informed Decisions

Ultimately, the right writing service for you will depend on your specific needs and circumstances. By understanding the factors that influence pricing and taking the time to research your options, you can make an informed decision that meets your requirements without breaking the bank. Look for reviews, testimonials, and samples of previous work to gauge the quality of service offered by different providers. Engaging in conversations with potential writers can also help you assess their expertise and compatibility with your project.

Whether you’re a student struggling with an assignment or a professional needing content for your business, knowing what to expect in terms of cost can help you navigate the world of writing services with confidence. Remember, the cost of words is not just about the dollar amount; it’s about the value they bring to your academic and professional journey. By investing wisely in writing services, you can ensure that your essays not only meet your immediate needs but also contribute positively to your long-term goals.

College Essays

If you grow up to be a professional writer, everything you write will first go through an editor before being published. This is because the process of writing is really a process of re-writing —of rethinking and reexamining your work, usually with the help of someone else. So what does this mean for your student writing? And in particular, what does it mean for very important, but nonprofessional writing like your college essay? Should you ask your parents to look at your essay? Pay for an essay service?

If you are wondering what kind of help you can, and should, get with your personal statement, you've come to the right place! In this article, I'll talk about what kind of writing help is useful, ethical, and even expected for your college admission essay . I'll also point out who would make a good editor, what the differences between editing and proofreading are, what to expect from a good editor, and how to spot and stay away from a bad one.

Advice for editors.

Should You Pay Money For Essay Editing?

The Bottom Line

What's next, what kind of help with your essay can you get.

Rather than talking in general terms about "help," let's first clarify the two different ways that someone else can improve your writing . There is editing, which is the more intensive kind of assistance that you can use throughout the whole process. And then there's proofreading, which is the last step of really polishing your final product.

Let me go into some more detail about editing and proofreading, and then explain how good editors and proofreaders can help you."

Editing is helping the author (in this case, you) go from a rough draft to a finished work . Editing is the process of asking questions about what you're saying, how you're saying it, and how you're organizing your ideas. But not all editing is good editing . In fact, it's very easy for an editor to cross the line from supportive to overbearing and over-involved.

Ability to clarify assignments. A good editor is usually a good writer, and certainly has to be a good reader. For example, in this case, a good editor should make sure you understand the actual essay prompt you're supposed to be answering.

Open-endedness. Good editing is all about asking questions about your ideas and work, but without providing answers. It's about letting you stick to your story and message, and doesn't alter your point of view.

body_landscape.jpg

Think of an editor as a great travel guide. It can show you the many different places your trip could take you. It should explain any parts of the trip that could derail your trip or confuse the traveler. But it never dictates your path, never forces you to go somewhere you don't want to go, and never ignores your interests so that the trip no longer seems like it's your own. So what should good editors do?

Help Brainstorm Topics

Sometimes it's easier to bounce thoughts off of someone else. This doesn't mean that your editor gets to come up with ideas, but they can certainly respond to the various topic options you've come up with. This way, you're less likely to write about the most boring of your ideas, or to write about something that isn't actually important to you.

If you're wondering how to come up with options for your editor to consider, check out our guide to brainstorming topics for your college essay .

Help Revise Your Drafts

Here, your editor can't upset the delicate balance of not intervening too much or too little. It's tricky, but a great way to think about it is to remember: editing is about asking questions, not giving answers .

Revision questions should point out:

  • Places where more detail or more description would help the reader connect with your essay
  • Places where structure and logic don't flow, losing the reader's attention
  • Places where there aren't transitions between paragraphs, confusing the reader
  • Moments where your narrative or the arguments you're making are unclear

But pointing to potential problems is not the same as actually rewriting—editors let authors fix the problems themselves.

Bad editing is usually very heavy-handed editing. Instead of helping you find your best voice and ideas, a bad editor changes your writing into their own vision.

You may be dealing with a bad editor if they:

  • Add material (examples, descriptions) that doesn't come from you
  • Use a thesaurus to make your college essay sound "more mature"
  • Add meaning or insight to the essay that doesn't come from you
  • Tell you what to say and how to say it
  • Write sentences, phrases, and paragraphs for you
  • Change your voice in the essay so it no longer sounds like it was written by a teenager

Colleges can tell the difference between a 17-year-old's writing and a 50-year-old's writing. Not only that, they have access to your SAT or ACT Writing section, so they can compare your essay to something else you wrote. Writing that's a little more polished is great and expected. But a totally different voice and style will raise questions.

Where's the Line Between Helpful Editing and Unethical Over-Editing?

Sometimes it's hard to tell whether your college essay editor is doing the right thing. Here are some guidelines for staying on the ethical side of the line.

  • An editor should say that the opening paragraph is kind of boring, and explain what exactly is making it drag. But it's overstepping for an editor to tell you exactly how to change it.
  • An editor should point out where your prose is unclear or vague. But it's completely inappropriate for the editor to rewrite that section of your essay.
  • An editor should let you know that a section is light on detail or description. But giving you similes and metaphors to beef up that description is a no-go.

body_ideas.jpg

Proofreading (also called copy-editing) is checking for errors in the last draft of a written work. It happens at the end of the process and is meant as the final polishing touch. Proofreading is meticulous and detail-oriented, focusing on small corrections. It sands off all the surface rough spots that could alienate the reader.

Because proofreading is usually concerned with making fixes on the word or sentence level, this is the only process where someone else can actually add to or take away things from your essay . This is because what they are adding or taking away tends to be one or two misplaced letters.

Laser focus. Proofreading is all about the tiny details, so the ability to really concentrate on finding small slip-ups is a must.

Excellent grammar and spelling skills. Proofreaders need to dot every "i" and cross every "t." Good proofreaders should correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar. They should put foreign words in italics and surround quotations with quotation marks. They should check that you used the correct college's name, and that you adhered to any formatting requirements (name and date at the top of the page, uniform font and size, uniform spacing).

Limited interference. A proofreader needs to make sure that you followed any word limits. But if cuts need to be made to shorten the essay, that's your job and not the proofreader's.

body_detective-2.jpg

A bad proofreader either tries to turn into an editor, or just lacks the skills and knowledge necessary to do the job.

Some signs that you're working with a bad proofreader are:

  • If they suggest making major changes to the final draft of your essay. Proofreading happens when editing is already finished.
  • If they aren't particularly good at spelling, or don't know grammar, or aren't detail-oriented enough to find someone else's small mistakes.
  • If they start swapping out your words for fancier-sounding synonyms, or changing the voice and sound of your essay in other ways. A proofreader is there to check for errors, not to take the 17-year-old out of your writing.

body_spill-1.jpg

What Do Colleges Think of Your Getting Help With Your Essay?

Admissions officers agree: light editing and proofreading are good—even required ! But they also want to make sure you're the one doing the work on your essay. They want essays with stories, voice, and themes that come from you. They want to see work that reflects your actual writing ability, and that focuses on what you find important.

On the Importance of Editing

Get feedback. Have a fresh pair of eyes give you some feedback. Don't allow someone else to rewrite your essay, but do take advantage of others' edits and opinions when they seem helpful. ( Bates College )

Read your essay aloud to someone. Reading the essay out loud offers a chance to hear how your essay sounds outside your head. This exercise reveals flaws in the essay's flow, highlights grammatical errors and helps you ensure that you are communicating the exact message you intended. ( Dickinson College )

On the Value of Proofreading

Share your essays with at least one or two people who know you well—such as a parent, teacher, counselor, or friend—and ask for feedback. Remember that you ultimately have control over your essays, and your essays should retain your own voice, but others may be able to catch mistakes that you missed and help suggest areas to cut if you are over the word limit. ( Yale University )

Proofread and then ask someone else to proofread for you. Although we want substance, we also want to be able to see that you can write a paper for our professors and avoid careless mistakes that would drive them crazy. ( Oberlin College )

On Watching Out for Too Much Outside Influence

Limit the number of people who review your essay. Too much input usually means your voice is lost in the writing style. ( Carleton College )

Ask for input (but not too much). Your parents, friends, guidance counselors, coaches, and teachers are great people to bounce ideas off of for your essay. They know how unique and spectacular you are, and they can help you decide how to articulate it. Keep in mind, however, that a 45-year-old lawyer writes quite differently from an 18-year-old student, so if your dad ends up writing the bulk of your essay, we're probably going to notice. ( Vanderbilt University )

body_thumbsup-3.jpg

Now let's talk about some potential people to approach for your college essay editing and proofreading needs. It's best to start close to home and slowly expand outward. Not only are your family and friends more invested in your success than strangers, but they also have a better handle on your interests and personality. This knowledge is key for judging whether your essay is expressing your true self.

Parents or Close Relatives

Your family may be full of potentially excellent editors! Parents are deeply committed to your well-being, and family members know you and your life well enough to offer details or incidents that can be included in your essay. On the other hand, the rewriting process necessarily involves criticism, which is sometimes hard to hear from someone very close to you.

A parent or close family member is a great choice for an editor if you can answer "yes" to the following questions. Is your parent or close relative a good writer or reader? Do you have a relationship where editing your essay won't create conflict? Are you able to constructively listen to criticism and suggestion from the parent?

One suggestion for defusing face-to-face discussions is to try working on the essay over email. Send your parent a draft, have them write you back some comments, and then you can pick which of their suggestions you want to use and which to discard.

Teachers or Tutors

A humanities teacher that you have a good relationship with is a great choice. I am purposefully saying humanities, and not just English, because teachers of Philosophy, History, Anthropology, and any other classes where you do a lot of writing, are all used to reviewing student work.

Moreover, any teacher or tutor that has been working with you for some time, knows you very well and can vet the essay to make sure it "sounds like you."

If your teacher or tutor has some experience with what college essays are supposed to be like, ask them to be your editor. If not, then ask whether they have time to proofread your final draft.

Guidance or College Counselor at Your School

The best thing about asking your counselor to edit your work is that this is their job. This means that they have a very good sense of what colleges are looking for in an application essay.

At the same time, school counselors tend to have relationships with admissions officers in many colleges, which again gives them insight into what works and which college is focused on what aspect of the application.

Unfortunately, in many schools the guidance counselor tends to be way overextended. If your ratio is 300 students to 1 college counselor, you're unlikely to get that person's undivided attention and focus. It is still useful to ask them for general advice about your potential topics, but don't expect them to be able to stay with your essay from first draft to final version.

Friends, Siblings, or Classmates

Although they most likely don't have much experience with what colleges are hoping to see, your peers are excellent sources for checking that your essay is you .

Friends and siblings are perfect for the read-aloud edit. Read your essay to them so they can listen for words and phrases that are stilted, pompous, or phrases that just don't sound like you.

You can even trade essays and give helpful advice on each other's work.

body_goats.jpg

If your editor hasn't worked with college admissions essays very much, no worries! Any astute and attentive reader can still greatly help with your process. But, as in all things, beginners do better with some preparation.

First, your editor should read our advice about how to write a college essay introduction , how to spot and fix a bad college essay , and get a sense of what other students have written by going through some admissions essays that worked .

Then, as they read your essay, they can work through the following series of questions that will help them to guide you.

Introduction Questions

  • Is the first sentence a killer opening line? Why or why not?
  • Does the introduction hook the reader? Does it have a colorful, detailed, and interesting narrative? Or does it propose a compelling or surprising idea?
  • Can you feel the author's voice in the introduction, or is the tone dry, dull, or overly formal? Show the places where the voice comes through.

Essay Body Questions

  • Does the essay have a through-line? Is it built around a central argument, thought, idea, or focus? Can you put this idea into your own words?
  • How is the essay organized? By logical progression? Chronologically? Do you feel order when you read it, or are there moments where you are confused or lose the thread of the essay?
  • Does the essay have both narratives about the author's life and explanations and insight into what these stories reveal about the author's character, personality, goals, or dreams? If not, which is missing?
  • Does the essay flow? Are there smooth transitions/clever links between paragraphs? Between the narrative and moments of insight?

Reader Response Questions

  • Does the writer's personality come through? Do we know what the speaker cares about? Do we get a sense of "who he or she is"?
  • Where did you feel most connected to the essay? Which parts of the essay gave you a "you are there" sensation by invoking your senses? What moments could you picture in your head well?
  • Where are the details and examples vague and not specific enough?
  • Did you get an "a-ha!" feeling anywhere in the essay? Is there a moment of insight that connected all the dots for you? Is there a good reveal or "twist" anywhere in the essay?
  • What are the strengths of this essay? What needs the most improvement?

Should You Pay Money for Essay Editing?

One alternative to asking someone you know to help you with your college essay is the paid editor route. There are two different ways to pay for essay help: a private essay coach or a less personal editing service , like the many proliferating on the internet.

My advice is to think of these options as a last resort rather than your go-to first choice. I'll first go through the reasons why. Then, if you do decide to go with a paid editor, I'll help you decide between a coach and a service.

When to Consider a Paid Editor

In general, I think hiring someone to work on your essay makes a lot of sense if none of the people I discussed above are a possibility for you.

If you can't ask your parents. For example, if your parents aren't good writers, or if English isn't their first language. Or if you think getting your parents to help is going create unnecessary extra conflict in your relationship with them (applying to college is stressful as it is!)

If you can't ask your teacher or tutor. Maybe you don't have a trusted teacher or tutor that has time to look over your essay with focus. Or, for instance, your favorite humanities teacher has very limited experience with college essays and so won't know what admissions officers want to see.

If you can't ask your guidance counselor. This could be because your guidance counselor is way overwhelmed with other students.

If you can't share your essay with those who know you. It might be that your essay is on a very personal topic that you're unwilling to share with parents, teachers, or peers. Just make sure it doesn't fall into one of the bad-idea topics in our article on bad college essays .

If the cost isn't a consideration. Many of these services are quite expensive, and private coaches even more so. If you have finite resources, I'd say that hiring an SAT or ACT tutor (whether it's PrepScholar or someone else) is better way to spend your money . This is because there's no guarantee that a slightly better essay will sufficiently elevate the rest of your application, but a significantly higher SAT score will definitely raise your applicant profile much more.

Should You Hire an Essay Coach?

On the plus side, essay coaches have read dozens or even hundreds of college essays, so they have experience with the format. Also, because you'll be working closely with a specific person, it's more personal than sending your essay to a service, which will know even less about you.

But, on the minus side, you'll still be bouncing ideas off of someone who doesn't know that much about you . In general, if you can adequately get the help from someone you know, there is no advantage to paying someone to help you.

If you do decide to hire a coach, ask your school counselor, or older students that have used the service for recommendations. If you can't afford the coach's fees, ask whether they can work on a sliding scale —many do. And finally, beware those who guarantee admission to your school of choice—essay coaches don't have any special magic that can back up those promises.

Should You Send Your Essay to a Service?

On the plus side, essay editing services provide a similar product to essay coaches, and they cost significantly less . If you have some assurance that you'll be working with a good editor, the lack of face-to-face interaction won't prevent great results.

On the minus side, however, it can be difficult to gauge the quality of the service before working with them . If they are churning through many application essays without getting to know the students they are helping, you could end up with an over-edited essay that sounds just like everyone else's. In the worst case scenario, an unscrupulous service could send you back a plagiarized essay.

Getting recommendations from friends or a school counselor for reputable services is key to avoiding heavy-handed editing that writes essays for you or does too much to change your essay. Including a badly-edited essay like this in your application could cause problems if there are inconsistencies. For example, in interviews it might be clear you didn't write the essay, or the skill of the essay might not be reflected in your schoolwork and test scores.

Should You Buy an Essay Written by Someone Else?

Let me elaborate. There are super sketchy places on the internet where you can simply buy a pre-written essay. Don't do this!

For one thing, you'll be lying on an official, signed document. All college applications make you sign a statement saying something like this:

I certify that all information submitted in the admission process—including the application, the personal essay, any supplements, and any other supporting materials—is my own work, factually true, and honestly presented... I understand that I may be subject to a range of possible disciplinary actions, including admission revocation, expulsion, or revocation of course credit, grades, and degree, should the information I have certified be false. (From the Common Application )

For another thing, if your academic record doesn't match the essay's quality, the admissions officer will start thinking your whole application is riddled with lies.

Admission officers have full access to your writing portion of the SAT or ACT so that they can compare work that was done in proctored conditions with that done at home. They can tell if these were written by different people. Not only that, but there are now a number of search engines that faculty and admission officers can use to see if an essay contains strings of words that have appeared in other essays—you have no guarantee that the essay you bought wasn't also bought by 50 other students.

body_monalisa.jpg

  • You should get college essay help with both editing and proofreading
  • A good editor will ask questions about your idea, logic, and structure, and will point out places where clarity is needed
  • A good editor will absolutely not answer these questions, give you their own ideas, or write the essay or parts of the essay for you
  • A good proofreader will find typos and check your formatting
  • All of them agree that getting light editing and proofreading is necessary
  • Parents, teachers, guidance or college counselor, and peers or siblings
  • If you can't ask any of those, you can pay for college essay help, but watch out for services or coaches who over-edit you work
  • Don't buy a pre-written essay! Colleges can tell, and it'll make your whole application sound false.

Student paper writing is a form of ghostwriting in which a student hires a writer to do a term or research paper, and the student gets credit for it. The paid essay writing service has been around for years, but, like other freelance jobs, the Internet has made it easier for writers and students to connect.

As a freelance writer looking for work, you may have encountered these jobs on writing websites, work-at-home job boards, or ads from harried students on Craigslist. If you have a website to promote your freelance business, a student may have contacted you directly.

Either way, the student paper industry is a real and viable way to make money as a freelance writer, if you have the right background and skills, and don't mind the questionable ethics behind it.

Students Who Need Academic Essays Written

Initially, the Internet made it easy for students to post completed essays online that other students could take and use as their own. Savvy teachers and professors caught on to this, and the rise of plagiarism checkers forced students, who didn't want to write their papers, to find an alternative.

There are several types of students who may hire writers to do their papers for them. In general, they fall into one or more of the categories below:

  • Procrastinators who waited too long to get started on their paper: These students tend to contact you at the last minute, which means you can often charge more for rushed assignments.
  • Lacking self-confidence to tackle a big assignment: These are students who tend to reach out ahead of time, with a little leeway on the due date.
  • Students for which English is a second language : For these students, writing papers for U.S. schools is difficult.
  • Lazy students: These students lack the drive to do the work themselves and have the money to pay someone to do it for them.

Why Get Paid to Write Student Papers?

Why would a writer agree to write a student's paper? Looking past the ethical considerations, there are several reasons a writer might add academic writing to their menu of services.

  • Enjoy academic topics: If you did well in school, remember the books you read and lessons you learned, and like to research, then writing student essays would allow you to use what you've already learned.
  • Pays decently compared to content writing: Writing student papers usually pays several hundred dollars. This, of course, depends on the level you're writing at, how long the paper is, and the time you have to write it. On average you'll be paid $9 to $15 per page (double spaced), more for graduate-level papers.
  • Steady work: Freelance writing work can ebb and flow, which can make it stressful during ebb times. However, there seems to always be students who need writers for their essays and papers.
  • Quick payment: Some writing gigs can take weeks, if not months, to pay you. Student writing through a company usually pays weekly.
  • Flexible work: You can work when and where you want, as long as you meet the deadline

Along with writing papers, there are services that involve providing research and editing help, especially with theses and dissertations. This type of work is more palatable for writers who don't feel writing students' papers is ethical. However, thesis and dissertation work usually requires an advanced degree.

Finding Student Paper Writing Jobs

The safest and easiest way to write student papers for pay is to go through one of the many companies that offer this service to students. Each will have their own criteria, but in most cases, you'll, at the very least, need a:

  • College degree or higher
  • Sample of your writing
  • Knowledge of style guides , such as APA and MLA
  • Experience in formatting footnotes, citations, and bibliography

When hired, you'll sign a contract that outlines what you're paid and when.

You can offer student essay writing directly through your freelance writing business, as well. In that case, you just need to prove to the student you can do the work, and arrange payment through PayPal or check, delivering the work via email in a Word or other document format that the student can edit.

For the writer, there are a few challenges in not using a company. For one thing, the person hiring you is a cheater, and if they'd cheat at school, he or she might try to cheat you. For that reason, you should demand full payment upfront, or not deliver the paper until the payment is made.

Why You Shouldn't Write Student Papers

There are challenges and cons to writing student papers for pay. For one, especially for college entrance exam essays, it can be difficult to match a student’s tone and voice. You may be a talented writer, but it stands to reason that your customer is not. How polished, exactly, should this work be without giving away that the student isn't the writer? This will depend on the topic and level of the course the paper is written for. Some companies frame their service as "model" papers, with the expectation that the student will take the paper and tweak it, sort of like private label rights, to make it their own.

Another issue is the research or reading inherent in college-level work. You might be able to write a three-page essay in an hour, earning $45 per hour, but if you have to read a book or other literature first, or do research, that will significantly lower your per-hour earnings.

The main consideration in this type of work is ethics. A writer who does this type of work is helping a student cheat. While not illegal, the freelance writer should understand that this doesn't mean it’s free of consequences. The student risks expulsion, if discovered. For the writer, it can hurt his or her reputation. Ask yourself what your cost would be, were it known, that you engage in this kind of work.

As mentioned earlier, some service providers get around the ethics question by insisting that the writing they sell to students are unique model papers that the student is supposed to use to help them learn. But chances are good that the student puts their name on the delivered product and turns it in.

Of course, as a freelance writer, you need to pay the bills, and so if you're in a bind, and need to make decent money quickly, student paper writing can help. Especially if you consider that the student is going to pay someone to write the paper. Why not you?

Alternatives to Writing Student Essays

If you're not comfortable with this type of freelance writing work, you do have other options, such as:

  • Book reviewing : If you enjoy reading and writing about what you read, this is the ideal freelance job.
  • Editing, indexing, and research support to Masters and Doctoral students: In this case, you're helping a student with the paper they've researched and will write or have written.
  • Ghostwriting: Similar to student writing, you're providing content that someone else will take credit for, but it's not academic cheating.
  • Article writing : There are many magazines and websites that accept long-form articles that are well-researched, interesting, and provocative. Check the Writer’s Market book or website, or do a search within your particular niche area.

The bottom line is that essay and term paper writing is a service that students are willing to pay for, and it’s probably not going away any time in the near future. You have to decide for yourself if this is a freelance writing option you feel comfortable tackling.
